Bolstered by bright blue skies and temperatures in the mid-50s, the walkers gathered to prepare for the 5-kilometer Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk that kicked off at 11 a.m.
Cheerleaders from Staten Island schools and dance school members performed routines to add spirit to the morning. A disc jockey played music to keep the energy level high.
Laura Pearson, 51, of Bulls Head, is a cancer survivor who was walking with her coworkers from Staten Island University Hospital.
Walking as a survivor, she said, gives hope to those currently battling the disease.
"When they first told me, you get so scared," she explained.
But she started treatment and got into support group, meeting others who beat breast cancer.
"You learn it's not a death sentence anymore," she said.
Last year's walkers raised $630,000 at last year's walk; expect a similar amount to be raised this year.
Funds raised go toward research, education and screening, and supporting women who get breast cancer. It is estimated that half of those newly diagnosed with breast cancer reach out to the American Cancer Society for help and support.
