Forms of Entertainment That Use Large Venues

Entertainment is usually considered a luxury that alleviates the moods of people and fosters enjoyment for the duration it is done. There are many different forms and some of these need larger venues than others. The reality of it is that enjoyment can be had in even the smallest form, which is hanging out with friends and having a good time together or just reading a good book in a quiet room. Some kinds of enjoyment are sometimes best enjoyed with large groups of people in a large place. Setting up the ambience for these kinds of places can be part of the responsibilities of the people who owns the venue or the artists who will be entertaining the people.

Concerts

These kinds of entertainment come in different forms and sizes. These are usually interacted by the artists and the audiences through forms of singing and dancing with some verbal communication in between. The larger concerts often need arenas and stadiums that can house several thousands of fans. Producers for these concerts often spend a lot for both visual and auditory enjoyment of the people who buy the tickets. It is important that the people enjoy themselves immensely in order for the following concerts to be a success in other places.

In some states, there are limitations when it comes to the variety of enjoyment that the artists will show or give to their fans. Some singers and dancers have very striking gimmicks that titillate the sense of their audiences and inspire them to spread how good the concert was by word of mouth.

Sports

The different kinds of sports can also be entertaining and can require the use of a large venue. These forms of entertainment usually happen seasonally and have their own schedules to follow. Many of the sports require stadiums that have the capacity to house thousands of sports fans.

The events can be done during the day as well as at night. The venues usually have facilities to cater to the needs of the thousands of fans, such as comfort rooms, lights for the bleachers and the game venue, food and many others. These facilities are important especially for venues that can hold a lot of people and their needs. The government makes sure that cleanliness and other requirements are met in order for the facility to operate and be open to the public. Tickets for the games or sports are usually sold before the games themselves, some are seasonally sold and bought by sports fans while others can be sold at the stadium on the day of the game. This form of entertainment can have enthusiastic audiences who root for their teams and often have different ways to encourage their team and discourage the opponents.

These are two of the bigger forms of entertainment that often require larger venues. The places where they are held often need to have different facilities that cater to the needs of the people who buy tickets for the concert or the games and be entertained.

Entertainment in Kalamazoo MI can come in many different forms! Find out about the artisanal happenings at http://www.millerauditorium.com/.

Rugby Union: Lancaster grateful to retiring pair

Stuart Lancaster has thanked Charlie Hodgson and Lee Mears for their services to side after they retired from international rugby.

Both Hodgson and Mears have found themselves down the pecking order at fly-half and hooker respectively, with the likes of Owen Farrell, Toby Flood and Dylan Hartley favoured by the England head coach.
With the pair coming towards the end of the careers and England looking to build for the 2015 World Cup, the duo have decided to quit international rugby.
Lancaster admitted he has been in talks with Hodgson and Mears recently and it was decided that now would be the appropriate time to focus on club rugby.
He said: "I cannot thank them enough for the support they have given me and this young squad as we move forward.
"I had chats with both of them in South Africa and our thoughts were not too dissimilar - that if we are building a team for 2015 then, just as we did in January, we have to decide on which players will take us forward and be in the mix in three years' time."

Berkshire Blog by Karen Christensen ? The sporting life of a ...

I was looking through some of my earliest journalism, written for my college?s alumni magazine during my first year at Santa Barbara. I walked into that job after a brief conversation with someone from the alumni office at a party for US regents scholars. I?d never done paid writing before and suspect that the fact that I had just arrived from England got me the gig. Years later they asked me to write about ?The Sporting Life.? This little essay may explain why Berkshire Publishing has become known for sports encyclopedias ? with a new and bigger edition of the Berkshire Encyclopedia of World Sport coming in 2013.

The Sporting Life

My mother, the bowling league champ and Sierra Club hiker, still looks bemused when I talk about sports. She doesn?t think she?s ever participated in sports, and she no more associates me with sports than with diamond mining. As a child I stayed inside to read. In junior high I used a broken leg as an excuse to sit out PE class for two months after the cast came off. By high school, competition was part of the suburban ethos I left behind when I set off for a commune in Oregon.

I made my first foray into sports when I arrived at UCSB as a transfer student in 1979. Rowing, I thought, okay. At least I wouldn?t have to stand up in front of people. I wouldn?t be able to make a mistake about which goal we were aiming for. And there were no balls. The 5 a.m. crew practices didn?t worry me, but I had never participated in any sport by choice and the whole idea worried everyone who knew me. Friends thought I was kidding. My brothers didn?t believe me. But I was healthy, energetic, determined ? I would, I could, learn to row.

Crew was a new sport at UCSB and there?s nothing like a need for numbers to lend a sense of welcome and camaraderie to a team sport. Most of the women at practice were real athletes, strong and confident. While there were a few other strays, who?d come out of curiosity or because crew would look good on a grad school application, I was the only sports virgin.

I not only had to learn a sport but how to train for a sport, with running and weights. I ran at dusk, hoping to attract as little attention as possible, and on my first time out someone yelled from a passing car, in a exasperated tone, ?Pick up your knees!!? That was one of the best pieces of advice I ever had. It doesn?t just apply to knees, or running. Once you decide to do something, move. Don?t hold back. Never, never shuffle.

I made it through the quarter. We learned to row in the swimming pool, and then on the lagoon. We ran (I was last, but I lifted my knees), we went to the weights room (where the men tried to stare us down), and the coach made us run three miles uphill on one of the roads outside town. To my joy ? and the astonishment of my teammates ? I did not come in last. Almost, but not quite. I had stamina, if not strength. We went out in an eight on Lake Cahuma and made it back to shore. I didn?t capsize the boat or lose the stroke. Survival without humiliation was enough. My teammates and the coach were tolerant, and even encouraging.

I tried new sports after college. In London, forays into sport meant leading a double life. Giving dinner parties on the evenings I wasn?t practicing aikido and karate. Working in publishing by day and helping organize a softball league at weekends. But I made friends and loved the sweaty camaraderie that developed during two hours on the mat or on the field, as well as the obligatory sessions in the pub afterwards. Both martial arts and softball were immigrant sports and attracted people from around the world. The Artful Dodgers, the softball team I managed (my teammates quickly realized that my greatest strengths were not evident at first base), came from Australia, Colombia, and Canada as well as the United States.

Today, much of my publishing life is spent in the world of sports, and I?ve learned that the role of sport in society goes far beyond my modest endeavors. Sport elicits strong feelings. Many people see sport as hopelessly stupid, crass, or corrupt. Others see sport as an unquestioned good, a moral pillar.

I knew from my own experience that recreational sport helps to build community, but the importance of sports extends into many other areas of our lives. Throughout human history, sports have create shared languages, and shared passions. Sports show what a culture values: competition or cooperation, achievement or adventure, physical prowess or self-discipline, speed or endurance. Sport also reflects how we resolve conflicts, and how we think about our identities as male or female. Because people pay so much attention to sports, they have become an arena where important contemporary issues ? such as cheating, drug use, violence, celebrity, sexual harassment, and the use of technology ? are played out, and sometimes worked out.

And sports is global. I?ve learned about camogie (an Irish women?s game), buzkashi (Afghan goatdragging), Finnish baseball, bicycle polo, and every form of football, from association football (known in the US as soccer), to Australian, Canadian, and of course US football. Sport at its best serves another social purpose, building a global consensus around issues such as women?s participation, preserving traditional cultures, and improving access to recreation facilities for all members of society.

While American sports like basketball (and softball) are spreading, just as British sports did in the last century, the reverse is also occurring. Sports that few Americans have heard of?sepaktakraw, for example, an important Southeast Asian footbag sport, and of course martial arts of many kinds?are spreading to the US and Europe.

My recent work on women?s sports (the International Encyclopedia of Women and Sports, Macmillan 2001) has opened yet another world: medieval smockracing, Victorian endurance walking, turn of the century women bullfighters, women athletes in Islamic countries, gender equity, and sexual harassment. But my enthusiasm for sports hasn?t turned me into a television spectator, an audience for Olympics sponsors. I still want to participate, not just watch, and my primary media is still bound within hard covers. My mother wouldn?t have been surprised to see me on Saturday afternoon, reading a Trollope novel while my husband and son watched the Connecticut Huskies and the Lady Vols. But even in Trollope, I found myself looking for sports, and finding them, too: tilting at the quintain, co-ed archery on the lawn, and ladies? riding to hounds.

Maximize your comfort while lounging in your living room ...

deep setting sectional sofas

When you?re only partway through a long, grueling day at work or school, what do you wish you were doing, and where do you wish you were? If your answer is snorkeling in Tahiti or scuba diving in Bora Bora, good luck with that. But if your answer is lounging around on a big, comfy living room couch, that?s right up our alley! If you live in a starter apartment (perhaps your living room consists of a few folding chairs) or you could use an upgrade to a more comfortable couch, we?ll help you pick out a seating situation that will turn this imagined escape into reality.

For maximum comfort: corduroy couches

If ?your number one priority is comfort, try getting a corduroy couch for your living room. Corduroy couches are a great choice for their soft, velvety texture, which is not only cozy and inviting, but also offers visual interest. To kick the comfort up a notch, toss on a plush throw in a bold color of your choice and some fun pillows to go with your couch. Try picking out a couch in a neutral color, such as taupe, brown or gray. These are versatile options that you?ll be less likely to get sick of, and it?ll be a cinch to switch out complementary throws and pillows whenever you feel like changing up your living room decor.

For maximum lounging space: deep setting sectional sofas

If you and your household take your lounging seriously, you probably don?t want to settle for a standard couch where only one person can lay down on it, leaving everyone else to settle for sitting on the floor. Try getting a deep setting sectional sofa instead. Deep setting sectional sofas are a great choice because they offer ample space to relax. These are not only great for everyday use; they?ll also come in handy when you host movie nights. Your guests will feel right at home and probably won?t want to leave by the end of the night!

What decor would you pair with a corduroy couch or deep setting sectional sofa?

Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB

Although casual users and data-hungry prosumers alike will agree that anything beyond two or three terabytes is unnecessary, such large capacities are practically indispensible for businesses whose very existence is staked on data-intensive applications. The Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 6TB ($499 direct) comfortably fits in this rarefied territory. Equally worth considering is its versatility, as it supports FireWire (400 and 800), USB 2.0, and eSATA interfaces. Our current Editors' Choice for desktop-class hard drives, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB) (Price, 4 stars), which, despite its smaller capacity, has a more versatile GoFlex adapter, but if capacity is your paramount consideration, it's worth considering.

Measuring 6.54 by 3.87 by 6.06 inches (HWD), the My Passport Studio Edition II is fairly sizeable?understandable, given that it's comprised of two 3TB drives beneath its matte-finish silver plastic chassis. Moreover, it's not nearly as bulky as others in its class, especially when one considers the unapologetically Herculean dimensions of the IoSafe Solo G3 (1TB) ($299 direct, 4.5 stars). The elegant plastic chassis is elegantly unadorned, save for the soft white glow emitted by an LED activity light in the front and the reflective silver WD logos embossed on the left and right sides. Air vents sporting dot- and dash-shaped cutouts run along three sides to keep things cool while providing a nice visual contrast to the subdued exterior. A quartet of I/O interfaces can be found on the rear of the drive, consisting of a micro USB 2.0 port, a pair of daisy-chainable FireWire800 ports (also compatible with FireWire 400) and an eSATA port. Unlike the comparably-sized LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series (6 TB) ($749 list, 4 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II does not support Thunderbolt. And unlike the CRU-DataPort RTX100-3SJ's (3TB) ($399 list, 3.5 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II does not support USB 3.0.

The My Passport Studio Edition II comes formatted to HFS+ for use on Mac OS X systems right out of the box, but can easily be reformatted to either FAT32 or NTFS. Although its compatibility with both systems is a plus that sets it apart from the Mac-only LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series, it must reformatted, whereas the FreeAgent GoFlex Desk can simply be swapped between systems without this added procedure. Like its predecessor, the My Book Studio Edition II (2TB) ($429.99 list, 4.5 stars), the My Passport Studio Edition II allows for reconfiguration of the RAID array from the pre-set RAID 0 array (striping, 6 TB) to RAID 1 (mirroring, 3 TB x 2) through the included WD Drive Manager software.

Though the $500 price tag attached to the My Passport Studio Edition II seems expensive at first blush, it ultimately breaks down to 8 cents per GB, making it considerably cheaper than similar drives in its class. Even taken as a whole, it's nonetheless significantly more affordable than the equally sized Lacie 2big Thunderbolt Series.

Performance
The My Passport Studio Edition II operated at a brisk pace using each of its three interfaces, but its nimble eSATA performance stole the show. Using this interface, the My Passport Studio Edition II transferred our standard 1.22GB test folder in a scant 12 seconds, the same amount of time as the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series using a Thunderbolt connection, and quicker than the Seagate GoFlex Desk's performance with USB 3.0 (15 seconds). And while the My Passport Studio Edition II still fell 2 seconds short of the CRU-DataPort RTX100-3SJ's impressive eSATA transfer rate of 10 seconds, its eSATA speed nonetheless edged past the CRU-DataPort's USB 3.0 transfer speed (14 seconds).

Even if you don't plan on utilizing an eSATA connection, the My Passport Studio still held its own against the competition. With a Mac, it transferred our test folder in an impressive 19 seconds (via FireWire 800) and 42 seconds (USB 2.0). It yielded somewhat slower results using Windows 7, clocking in at 24 seconds (FireWire 800) and 48 seconds (USB 2.0), putting it slightly behind both the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk and the Iomega Mac Companion (3TB) ($369.99 list, 3.5 stars), both of which transferred our test folder in 42 seconds under USB 2.0. Regardless of which operating system is used, the Iomega Mac Companion's FireWire 800 speed (30 seconds) was nonetheless handily outpaced by the My Passport Studio II, both in Windows and Mac environments.

Although the My Passport Studio II's PCMark 05 hard drive test scores were fairly high, particularly with eSATA (5,396), but also with USB 2.0 (3,051) and FireWire 800 (4,493), it was ultimately trounced by the CRU-DataPort TRX100-3SJ's scores of 9,023 (USB 3.0) and 8,269 (eSATA).

Ultimately, the Western Digital My Passport Studio II (6TB) has plenty of noteworthy attributes. In addition to 6TB of storage, its configurable RAID scheme and trifecta of connectivity options make for a rather flexible external desktop-class hard drive. Still, it's not nearly as versatile nor future-proofed as the Editors' Choice Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB), which sports a GoFlex adapter and can be easily swapped between Mac and Windows operating systems without the reformatting. If capacity is your main consideration, however, then your choice ultimately boils down to the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt Series (6TB) or the My Passport Studio II. If this is the case, stick with the My Passport Studio II, because, despite its minor shortcomings, its combination of capacity and performance make it a fine choice.

TBR 313: Jane Austen and marriage

Jane Austen & Marriage, Hazel Jones

I don't read much literary criticism. As important as books have always been to me, I never wanted to study literature. I feel like I didn't learn the language of lit crit, so I can't understand much of it. But I do enjoy reading biographies of my favorite authors, discovering more about their lives and the context of their writing. With Jane Austen, I also enjoy books that explore an aspect of her worlds, real and fictional, through her novels and her own life. I think of these as the "Jane Austen and" books. One of my favorites is Maggie Lane's Jane Austen and Food. I've also learned a lot from Irene Collins' Jane Austen and the Clergy, Susannah Fullerton's Jane Austen & Crime, and Mary Waldron's Jane Austen and the Fiction of Her Time. When I saw a review of Jane Austen & Marriage in the JASNA newsletter, I added it to my list.

I enjoyed this informative and entertaining book very much. Hazel Jones notes in her introduction that marriage in Jane Austen's time is a complex subject: "These were years of great change and great resistance to change, creating a state of flux in that trickiest of personal relationships, marriage." One of the more influential changes was the growing ideal of companionate marriage, based on love, rather than marriage for social or financial gain. If the goal was a loving, stable, lasting relationship, rather than a marriage of convenience, the choice of a partner became critical, and the criteria different. How did one make the best choice, and who should do the choosing? Jones argues that the ideal of companionate marriage also challenged traditional views of dominant husbands and subservient wives, though she notes that many traditionalists criticized what they saw as radical theories bent on destroying marriage and family.

Jones explores several different aspects of marriage, including courtship, the wedding itself, the honeymoon, marital problems, the arrival of children, and naturally, given Austen's own life, the fate of those who never married ("spinsterhood" vs. "single blessedness"). In discussing each aspect, Jones draws on Austen's experiences and that of her family and friends, particularly as described in her letters, as well as the lives of her fictional characters. In addition, she brings in the experiences of Austen's contemporaries though their letters and journals, as well as newspaper articles. Jones also relies on conduct manuals and advice books, including the sermons of Rev. James Fordyce, which Mr. Collins chose to read aloud to his cousins, at least until Lydia's yawns offended him. Jones has great fun pointing out the absurdity of some of their arguments, though a few times she seems to take them a bit personally, and a tone of irritation slips through, as in her description of the Rev. Thomas Gisborne, who "deprecated the 'rage of rambling' and brandished St Paul - woman must be a 'keeper at home' - as a big stick to beat wandering females back indoors."

Each of Jane Austen's heroines ends up in a companionate marriage, though each takes a different route and a different hero. Her parents' marriage was a companionate one, as were her brothers'. I had not considered the effect of her parents' marriage on her own view of marriage. I've always been more intrigued by the lack of strong mothers in Austen's books, given her close relationship with her own mother. But in her circle of family and friends, she had many different varieties of marriage to study. From them, Jones contends, she developed an understanding of marriage that combined practicality with romance:

No Jane Austen heroine marries for money: affection is always part of the equation - yet the recognition that romance alone would neither keep body and soul together nor sustain martial accord is a crucial element underpinning all of her writing.

At the same time, Austen recognized the toll that marriage could take on a woman, in constant child-bearing, in marital problems. But single women, particularly those who like Austen herself lacked financial resources, faced many difficulties and hardships, including the ridicule society expressed for "old maids." Jones argues, though, that "Jane Austen knew that for her, the prospect of becoming an old maid at last was her best chance of self-fulfillment," because it gave her the space, the time, to concentrate on her writing. As she told her family, "her books were her children."

Some Resent The Responsibility, But Then Feel Guilt Over The Acrimony.

Mobility aids are integral to helping our ageing population keep mobile letting them age in effect. Yet, they can ignorantly create questions of safety with unintentional implications. Careful selections, quality and understanding the devices intended use is crucial to stopping wounds. Splinters are the most typical fall injury linked with hikers and canes. Folk are 7 times more probable to get injured in a fall with a hiker verses a cane.

They are rather wanted to provide pro and emotional care for them. When you select a carer, it is really essential to select somebody with some good qualities. You want to have a look for someone that is born with some good qualities to be sure that she is wonderfully fit to take care of them. There are really some qualities that even the best carer coaching can't teach. The advantages to the elder include getting the right care earlier, preservation of autonomy for so long as possible the facility to age with grace, and the safety of realizing that you've got an advocate devoted to maximising standard of life. There are 3 principal goals of the Life Care Plan that we're going to help you develop and implement : First, helping you and your much loved one get good care, whether your care is provided at home or outside of the normal home setting like a controlled living facility, or when necessary, a retirement home. The Life Care Plan connects your worries about long term care as you go thru the later stages of your life with the information and experience of an Elder Law lawyer and an Elder Care Coordinator who will be with you and your family each stage along the way to help you in making the right selections. This is the most vital of all goals, for it is going to the heart of your standard of life in your later years. Don?t cause them into doing this, but inspire on them how critical it might be to help them escape bad injury should they fall. Once you've gone thru this exercise with them, you'll be wanting to work with them on what to do when they are on the ground. Show them the simple way to roll onto their hands in order that they may be able to crawl to a phone to call for help. Not merely will this help your elder in understanding the best way to get to the telephone, nonetheless it will help them in understanding the correct way to help themselves in opposition to panicking when they fall. Carers do have foreboding and depression.

Some resent the responsibility, but then feel guilt over the antagonism. Some companies are friendly toward adult custodians of aged folks, but some staff have not progressed to that point yet. You may be missing time from work, just as you do when you have to remain home because a kid is sick. Naturally, you wish to be a responsible adult kid, and since you like your mom and pop, you would really like to ensure they're well treated.

The Rise of the Belt in Modern Western Culture

By Anonymous on Jun 22, 2012 04:56 pm

Belts have been in use around the world since very ancient times. Records and artifacts show them being used for male clothing since the Bronze Age (as early as 3600 BC). A belt was almost certain to be only functional throughout much of history. In the 1800s, however, belts began to be used for fashion as well as utilitarian reasons. Military units around the world incorporated them into their uniform regulations, where they were often highly decorated. They have generally been more common for men, although women have been known to use them historically, and of course now both genders wear them at will.

Isn?t it true that some women always seem to look totally amazing? But, it has to do with the mood, posture (& how you carry yourself), hair, skin, and clothing. You may even have been born with fair looks, but when you nail these elements, you can be stunning.
