DePaul Gay and Lesbian Office Site Links to Pro-Gay ?Marriage ...

The Facebook site of the Office of LGBTQA Student Services?at DePaul?University is filled with gay ?marriage? propaganda and even links to a site that urges Facebook to?recognize the Polyamorous.

The Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer and Ally (LGBTQA) Student Services at DePaul University was created as an effort by the university to create a ?more comprehensive approach to supporting LGBTQ?students on campus? and boasts that ?the?Office of LGBTQA Student Services will also allow the university to continue its evolution and become a more?progressive, diverse, and supportive community.?

The DePaul?LGBTQA Student Service?s Facebook site links to a news report of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel saying ?The time is now? for gay ?marriage,? shares a poster congratulating Spain for legalizing gay ?marriage? and even urged people to vote for gay ?marriage??on election day saying ?support equality!?

The Office of LGBTQA Student Services site also links to a site called ?Polyamory for Facebook? that?urges Facebook to allow more than one name in the relationship status box as a way of being sensitive to those who take part in polyamorous relationships. That site explains it this way:

This page is created for awareness & love. The thought behind it is that Facebook does not have the option to add more th(a)n one person to your relationship status, also the option of open relationship does not suit the nature of polyamorous?relationships. So my suggestion is, promote this page, & write the staff of face book letting them know we want the features added. The ability to add more th(a)n one person & a general Poly relationship status.

DePaul did not respond to questions from The Cardinal Newman Society.

Intuit GoPayment comes to the UK, renames itself Intuit Pay

In a bid to catch mobile payment rival Square napping, Intuit GoPayment is leaping across the pond to begin an assault on the UK. It's certainly putting the effort in, having had to rework its hardware to be compatible with Chip-and-Pin and being forced, for legal reasons, to drop the "Go" and "ment" parts of its name. The service is currently in a limited trial before being rolled out to switched-on stallholders and itinerant fraudsters (we kid) nationwide.

Instant View: GDP growth revised up, jobless claims fall

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. economy grew faster than first reported between July and September but possible cuts in government spending and tax increases early next year could slow its momentum.

Separate data showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits dropped for a second week, unwinding some of the storm-related surge, which has muddled the labor market picture.

COMMENTS:

JOSEPH CARSON, U.S. ECONOMIST AND DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL ECONOMIC REEARCH, ALLIANCEBERNSTEIN, NEW YORK:

"The GDP revision was not surprising. We had stronger export performance and inventory build but it seems the inventory build was intentional since orders rose in October. The jobless claims numbers are still volatile due to the hurricane. We expect contraction in November payroll employment based on dislocations from the hurricane and then some strong recoveries in payroll growth in December and January. If you look at the GDP data, the public sector grew 3.5 and private sector grew 2.1 percent, but on year-on-year basis, the private sector grew at a 3 percent rate.

SCOTT BROWN, CHIEF ECONOMIST, RAYMOND JAMES, ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA

"Both sets of numbers were pretty close to estimates. With jobless claims, you are still seeing the effects from Sandy, but you should see them come down in the couple of weeks. You saw the same thing happen with Katrina when you saw claims spike up because people couldn't file the claims (in the previous weeks).

"The spike in claims could show up in the next payroll report. The Beige Book didn't paint a very rosy picture on the jobs market. The trend in hiring is still relatively low.

"With GDP, the headline is higher than the initial estimate, but the details were disappointing. We saw downward revisions in two key components, consumer spending and business investment.

"The slowdown in consumer spending from Sandy might subtract a few tenths of a percent in GDP for the fourth quarter. Also firms just don't want to expand in this environment."

OMER ESINER, CHIEF MARKET ANALYST, COMMONWEALTH FOREIGN EXCHANGE, WASHINGTON

"GDP is a good headline number, but when you look into the figures, you see the bulk of the rise is inventory adjustment and a sharp spike in government spending. So I think the market may look past this number, thinking real GDP in the economy is a bit lower. It was also concerning to see consumer spending revised down. On jobless claims, it was encouraging to see it fall below the 400,000 handle, but we're still trying to evaluate the impact of Hurricane Sandy."

PETER CARDILLO, CHIEF MARKET ECONOMIST AT ROCKWELL GLOBAL CAPITAL IN NEW YORK:

"We are starting to see the jobless claims start to readjust to pre-Sandy levels little by little. But the GDP was much stronger than I expected, obviously that is good news for the third quarter. This just adds to the bullish feeling that once Washington resolves the fiscal cliff then we continue to grow at modest rates."

JOSEPH TREVISANI, CHIEF MARKET STRATEGIST, WORLDWIDE MARKETS, WOODCLIFF LAKE, NEW JERSEY

"The positive revision to economic growth in the third quarter is consistent with job creation that was almost three times faster than in the previous three months. Despite the effects of Hurricane Sandy the improvement should continue into year end. Good cheer for equities and risk traders, less so for the dollar."

MARKET REACTION:

STOCKS: U.S. stock index futures held gains after the data.

BONDS: U.S. bond prices pared losses

FOREX: The euro held gains against the dollar

Forex News: Euro Trading Steady Above 1.2900 Ahead of German ...

Now that more than 24 hours have passed since the Greece bailout agreement, most of the responding chatter has already been exhausted, and we have been left in today?s European session without a major fundamental story to guide trading. The major story currently affecting asset markets is the impending US fiscal cliff, and Harry Reid?s comments, that not much progress on a deal has been made, sent US equities lower in yesterday?s session.

Furthermore, despite the lack of an upcoming major market moving event, a lot of analysts are calling for a reversal of recent Euro gains, as EURUSD trading showed a false break of 1.3000 in yesterday?s session. DailyFX Currency Strategist Ilya Spivak said he continues to hold the pair short, and Chief Strategist John Kicklighter said in his daily market wrap-up that he initiated a EURJPY short.

The only European data release that could possibly affect trading is the German inflation for November; the average expectation among Bloomberg surveyed analysts is for a 1.9% annual rise in consumer prices.

Also, there has been some small amounts of chatter in today?s session about the Greece deal. ECB member Nowotny said that the agreement was the best of all alternative solutions. Nowotny said that there are no ideal solutions for Greece and that a debt cut is not on the table anymore. He also remarked that Greece has implemented massive reforms, but it is still not enough.

Additionally we heard a prediction from the Bank of Spain that data indicates that the Spanish GDP will continue to fall in Q4, and that ECB measures are starting to wear out. France Finance Minister Moscovici said that the French GDP will rise by 0.8% in 2013. In England, MPC member Bean said the Bank of England hasn?t shut the door on further quantitative easing and that uncertainty is limiting stimulus effectiveness.

The Euro is currently trading above 1.2900 against the US Dollar in forex markets. Resistance might continue to be provided by the key 1.3000 line, and support could be provided by a previous support line around 1.2824.

The Daily Draw | seesanctum.com Blog

Date: Thursday, November 29, 2012?

Jupiter rules Thursday. Considered a planet of increase, Jupiter rules higher consciousness. Its energy is that of expansive outlook, wisdom, gain, and improvement.? Endeavors that focus on abundance/prosperity and spiritual pursuits work well with this energy.

Today?s Draw

Card Drawn: Four of Swords

Sacred Rose Tarot

Card Energy:

Reflect, release, discover; these are words you hear often in The Draw and along the reoad to self-empowerment. They can develop into encouraging mantras or they can lead down a path of quick fix douche-baggery. It really depends on what?s behind the words and who is doing the work.

The lesson for those who want to create a better life and reality for themselves is to simply do the work. Whether you find inspiration through Tarot, Yoga, self-help courses, or religion, the words and the means aren?t as important as what you do to bring about positive change.

When the 4 of Swords appears it serves as an opportunity to re-group and reflect. It marks the time in our lives when we?re at a crossroads or have completed a project, yet remain unsure of the next step. Additionally, it can indicate a peiriod when we?re overwhelmed, tired, and feeling used up. When you find yourself facing any of these circumstances, the 4 of Swords advises that you take a time-out, come back and view your circumstances from a different perspective. It?s good advice, and can be filed as one more tool of transformation in your inventory.?

Collective Intent:

Focus on your home environment. Think about what you?d like to do with your home to make it the perfect restorative retreat. Whether you decide to add some plants or flowers, or do a complete remodel, think of changes you can make to create the perfect sanctuary.

Autism severity may stem from fear

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Most people know when to be afraid and when it's okay to calm down.

But new research on autism shows that children with the diagnosis struggle to let go of old, outdated fears. Even more significantly, the Brigham Young University study found that this rigid fearfulness is linked to the severity of classic symptoms of autism, such as repeated movements and resistance to change.

For parents and others who work with children diagnosed with autism, the new research highlights the need to help children make emotional transitions -- particularly when dealing with their fears.

"People with autism likely don't experience or understand their world in the same way we do," said Mikle South, a psychology professor at BYU and lead author of the study. "Since they can't change the rules in their brain, and often don't know what to expect from their environment, we need to help them plan ahead for what to expect."

In their study, South and two of his undergraduate neuroscience students -- Tiffani Newton and Paul Chamberlain -- recruited 30 children diagnosed with autism and 29 without to participate in an experiment. After seeing a visual cue like a yellow card, the participants would feel a harmless but surprising puff of air under their chins.

Part-way through the experiment, the conditions changed so that a different color preceded the puff of air. The researchers measured participants' skin response to see if their nervous system noticed the switch and knew what was coming.

"Typical kids learn quickly to anticipate based on the new color instead of the old one," South said. "It takes a lot longer for children with autism to learn to make the change."

The amount of time it took to extinguish the original fear correlated with the severity of hallmark symptoms of autism.

"We see a strong connection between anxiety and the repetitive behaviors," South said. "We're linking symptoms used to diagnose autism with emotion difficulties not usually considered as a classic symptom of autism."

The persistence of needless fears is detrimental to physical health. The elevated hormone levels that aid us in an actual fight or flight scenario will cause damage to the brain and the body if sustained over time.

And the families who participate in social skills groups organized by South and his students can relate to the new findings.

"In talking to parents, we hear that living with classic symptoms of autism is one thing, but dealing with their children's worries all the time is the greater challenge," South said. "It may not be an entirely separate direction to study their anxiety because it now appears to be related."

The complete study appears in the journal Autism Research. The project began when Newton received a university grant to conduct research with a faculty mentor. After graduating with a degree in neuroscience, she began working at a clinic in Michigan. Chamberlain is finishing his senior year at BYU and is currently interviewing with medical schools.

Review: The Sessions | Film Reviews | Gambit New Orleans News ...

Is it possible to make a light-hearted movie about a man in an iron lung? The Sessions comes awfully close to realizing that unlikely goal via the true story of journalist and poet Mark O'Brien, who decided at age 38 to lose his virginity despite the extreme physical disability he acquired through a childhood bout with polio. Writer/director Ben Lewin based the film on a magazine article O'Brien wrote called "On Seeing a Sex Surrogate" and on discussions with both O'Brien's real-life surrogate and late-life partner, and he captures the intelligence and wry humor that make his hero's struggles a worthy subject.

??What truly distinguishes The Sessions (which won the Audience Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival) is the grown-up and matter-of-fact way it addresses the entire topic of sex. Helen Hunt brings clear-eyed depth to the role of sex therapist Cheryl Cohen Greene, allowing The Sessions to equate sex with love and intimacy in a manner seldom seen in movies. As O'Brien, John Hawkes (Winter's Bone) quietly builds a strong and profoundly human presence. It's more entertaining and uplifting than the basic facts of the story suggest, even if it doesn't quite transcend its obvious Oscar-bait status. The Sessions may be an unconventional love story, but it's a love story all the same. ? KEN KORMAN

Microsoft sold over 750K Xbox 360s last week, more than double Wii U sales

Microsoft's aging Xbox 360 console still has some pep in its proverbial step, moving more than 750K consoles last week in the US alone, rounded out by Black Friday. Between November 18 and 23, 360 sales bucked internal forecasts -- no doubt bolstered by the release of Halo 4 a few weeks prior, as well as holiday bundles -- helping Microsoft's game box to best Nintendo's new Wii U by more than double (during the Wii U's launch week, no less). Of course, the Xbox 360 now exists in a variety of flavors, from the $99 subscription model to the $300 S model; this makes Nintendo's $300 minimum for a Wii U a somewhat unfair comparison with the variety of Xbox 360s out there.

Regardless, Redmond's assuredly hoping these sales numbers will keep Xbox 360 in the top of NPD's monthly sales charts (October was the 360's 22nd consecutive month on top), though we have a few more weeks before we'll hear for certain which console maker moved the most units during one of the year's most crucial sales months. Despite a new PlayStation 3 model and the launch of the Vita this year, Sony's yet to announce its Black Friday numbers.

Arafat grave dug up for probe of poison suspicion

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? Eight years after Yasser Arafat's mysterious death, his political heirs opened his grave Tuesday and let forensics experts take samples from his remains, defying strong cultural taboos in search of evidence that the icon of Palestinian nationalism was poisoned.

Palestinians have claimed for years that Israel poisoned Arafat, who died in a French hospital. Israel has denied the charges.

The exhumation marked the end of months of procedural wrangling but only the beginning of the testing. Palestinian officials said it would take at least three months to get results, and even then, they might not be conclusive.

Workers opened Arafat's tomb before daybreak Tuesday, laying bare the remains some four meters (13 feet) below ground level, the Palestinian health minister said. A Palestinian forensics examiner took some 20 samples and handed them to Swiss, French and Russian experts, officials said.

Huge sheets of blue tarpaulin draped over Arafat's mausoleum hid the scene from view, part of an attempt by Palestinian officials to minimize any potential backlash against digging up the grave of Arafat, still widely revered in the Palestinian territories.

By midmorning, the grave was resealed, and Palestinian officials laid wreaths of flowers to signal Arafat's reburial.

The three teams will separately analyze the samples for possible poison, including polonium-210, a lethal radioactive substance first detected in elevated amounts on some of Arafat's clothing this summer.

Polonium disintegrates rapidly, and experts have cautioned that too much time may have passed since Arafat's death to reach a conclusive result.

Polonium was used in the 2006 killing of Alexander Litvinenko, a former KGB officer turned Russian government critic. Litvinenko blamed the Kremlin for poisoning him.

Israel has denied killing Arafat, but many Palestinians believe Israel's then-prime minister, Arafat nemesis Ariel Sharon, had means, motive and opportunity.

Former Sharon spokesman Raanan Gissin said Tuesday that such allegations are baseless and that Israel "had no reason" to kill Arafat, who in his final years lived under Israeli military siege in his walled West Bank compound.

Palestinians launched an investigation immediately after Arafat's death at a French military hospital but made no progress. The dormant probe got a jolt this summer when a Swiss lab found the polonium on Arafat belongings provided by his widow, Suha.

The initial discovery, part of an investigation by the Arab satellite TV station Al-Jazeera, was followed by wrangling between Mrs. Arafat, other relatives and Arafat's successor, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Mrs. Arafat wanted a quick exhumation, Abbas initially hesitated and Arafat nephew Nasser al-Kidwa said he opposed digging up the remains.

In the end, Abbas could not be seen as blocking a thorough investigation and, armed with blessings from Muslim religious leaders, authorized the exhumation.

Abbas was en route to the United Nations on Tuesday, giving him some distance from the proceedings right outside his office window.

Three different teams were present when the grave was opened Tuesday: one from the Swiss lab, one from France, where an official death inquiry was launched at the request of the widow, and one from Russia, responding to a call for help by Abbas.

Palestinian Health Minister Hani Abdeen told a news conference Tuesday that the remains were four meters (13 feet) below the ground.

Mrs. Arafat, estranged from most of the Palestinian leadership, followed the exhumation from her home in Malta, according to a local newspaper. Mrs. Arafat, who did not consent to an autopsy immediately after her husband's death, told The Times of Malta that her husband's death was the "most important mystery in the Middle East."

Arafat died a month after falling ill at his West Bank compound. The immediate cause of death was a stroke, but the underlying reasons remain unclear, leading to widespread belief in the Arab world that Israel poisoned him.

Medical files released by Palestinian investigators earlier this year portrayed Arafat as a robust 75-year-old whose sudden health crisis was initially blamed on viral gastroenteritis.

Arafat's downward spiral began Oct. 11, 2004, when he vomited after a late supper. His condition deteriorated and two weeks later he was flown to France where he died Nov. 11, 2004.

Dr. Bashir Abdullah, a physician on the Palestinian team of investigators, said Tuesday that Arafat's death "cannot be explained in the framework of disease, and therefore our explanation is that there must have been poisonous material."

Palestinian officials acknowledged Tuesday that they had a long road ahead and that the investigation could hit a dead end.

Tawfik Tirawi, the head of the Palestinian team, said the Palestinians would ask the International Criminal Court to investigate further if there is evidence of poisoning.

Later this week, Abbas is seeking U.N. recognition of "Palestine" as a non-member observer state, an upgrade that could give Palestinians access to the ICC.

Tirawi said previous calls by some high-ranking Israeli officials to get rid of Arafat were an indication that Israel was involved, adding, "we are looking for the evidence."

Former Sharon aides have argued that Israel had no reason to kill Arafat since it had already pushed him aside by confining him to his compound.

For decades, Arafat was the symbol of the Palestinians' struggle for an independent state.

After returning from exile to the Palestinian territories in 1994, as part of interim peace deals with Israel, he zigzagged between leading negotiations with Israel and condoning violence.

Arafat, along with two Israeli leaders, received the Nobel Peace Prize for his commitment to work toward peace with Israel.

He later presided over a violent Palestinian uprising against Israel's occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem, the territories they seek for a state. As the uprising escalated, Israel confined him to his Ramallah compound.

Arafat also faced criticism at home, where some accused his political circle of corruption and the pocketing of large amounts of aid. But he remains a widely revered figure, and his portrait frequently appears in government offices and street posters.

Royal Treasures From The Louvre: French Exhibition Debuts In San Francisco (PHOTOS)

As just a momentary glimpse of Louis XIV's royal chateau at Versailles makes abundantly clear, the French royal family knew how to live. At least until they all got their heads chopped off.

Over the near century and a half between the Sun King's ascension to the throne and the French Revolution, the royal family amassed one of the most impressive collection of riches in the world. But to see much of the surviving remnants of said fortune, one must decamp across the pond to check the items out firsthand.

Until now. Earlier this month, San Francisco's Legion of Honor entered into an agreement with the Louvre, the preeminent art museum in our sister city of Paris, to show a collection of the royal family's beautiful and historic relics.

Entitled "Royal Treasures from the Louvre: Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette," the exhibit features a dazzling array of items ranging from a golden coffee grinder to personal snuffboxes used by the infamous family.

"They were always buying contemporary art and to try to have the best in every field," said Louvre director Henri Loyrette told ABC San Francisco. "To look carefully at these objects to see how they are made, and what kind of history they tell. It's also a kind of history of France from Louis XIV to the French Revolution."

Some of the pieces on display are being shown outside France for the first time ever.

This exhibit is just the first part in five-year collaboration between the Louvre and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco that will consist of "the sharing of significant works of art."

"I can just imagine Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette walking down in front [of the Legion of Honor] and feeling very comfortable with the French neo-classical building that we have," joked San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee during a press conference announcing the collaboration.

The Royal Treasures exhibit runs at the Legion of Honor until March 17, 2013.

12 Tips for a Cat Safe Christmas Tree - Eagle Hardware Farm & Ranch

12 Tips for a Cat Safe Christmas Tree

cat in a christmas tree 12 Tips for a Cat Safe Christmas Tree The Christmas tree might as well be an early holiday gift to your cats. Kitty can?t resist the urge to sniff, cheek rub, claw?and scale the branches to reach the highest possible perch. Don?t blame your cat. It?s normal for cats to compete for the top spot (literally and figuratively) to secure their place in kitty society.

Youngsters won?t care about social standing, but high energy kitten play turns the holiday tree into a jungle gym. Tree encounters of the kitty kind not only risks breaking your heirloom ornaments, your furred family members can be injured by chewing or swallow dangerous items.

Rather than fight a losing battle to keep cats at bay, create a second cat-safe tree with these 12 tips, so the fur-kids can enjoy the holidays as much as you do.

1. Put yourself in your cat?s ?paws.? Satisfy her desire to claw, lounge on branches, and trust that it won?t tip over under her assault. Match the tree size, sturdiness, base (perhaps add guy-wires for steadiness) to the activity level and number of cats.

2. Ditch the lights, and any ?fake-snow? flocking that can be chewed or swallowed. Instead, decorate with cotton balls or pillow-stuffing fleece for that snowy look on branches or around the base. If you?ve chosen a real tree, water with plain water and no additives in case kitty decides to drink.

3. Strings and garland look great on the tree, but prove deadly inside a cat when swallowed. Dried flowers like baby?s breath look lovely and are nontoxic even if clueless kittens nibble.

4. To increase the fun factor, insert a few sprigs of dried catnip?but be prepared for the cats to dismantle the tree!

5. Catnip toys make great kitty tree decorations and won?t be destroyed during the feline assaults. Use ?orphan? socks (singletons without a mate), fill with the ?nip, and knot the open end.

63919 396x303 Cat in christmas tree 12 Tips for a Cat Safe Christmas Tree 6. Jingle bells (quarter size or larger) can?t be swallowed and offer movement and sound when hung from ribbon on a branch. Put one inside the sealed catnip sock for more jingly fun.

7. Furry toy mice come in bright colors?or go with a standard white theme?and can be placed in the branches for your mouse-aholic feline.

8. Craft stores offer inexpensive bags filled with soft pompoms in a variety of colors and sizes?even sparkly ones. Cats love to play with these. Pompoms are so cheap you can fill the branches with one color theme, or a rainbow approach.

9. Many cats adore feathers, but remember they can chew and swallow these. As long as supervised, a few feathers placed in the tree can be a fun accent as well. How about a bright feather boa instead of garland?

10. Small stuffed toys?kitty theme or otherwise?appeal to many cats. Place around the base of the tree. Feline puzzle toys filled with special treats also are fun.

11. Don?t forget the ?cheap thrills.? Empty boxes, wads of holiday paper, and even paper shopping bags thrill cats. Remove bag handles so the cat won?t get hung around her neck.

12. Toss a few special kitty treats in the boxes or bags. The smellier the treat, the better cats like them.

xmastreecat1 12 Tips for a Cat Safe Christmas Tree Be prepared to re-decorate the tree after the cats have fun. But a ?Cat-mas? tree not only answers your kitty?s Santa Paws prayers, it means she?ll be more likely to leave your formal tree and decorations alone. That promotes a merry Christmas for the whole family, furry and otherwise.

Ex-SAC manager granted $5 million bail in trading case

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A former SAC Capital portfolio manager was released on $5 million bail on Monday after making his first appearance in a New York court on charges of making illegal trades that hedge fund titan Steven A. Cohen personally signed off on.

Mathew Martoma, 38, of Boca Raton, Florida, was charged last week in what U.S. prosecutors called "the most lucrative" insider-trading scheme ever.

Martoma was accused of helping Cohen's firm avoid losses and reap profits totaling $276 million in the summer of 2008 by using insider tips he obtained from a doctor about Elan Corp and Wyeth LLC. Martoma worked for CR Intrinsic, a unit of Cohen's SAC Capital.

Cohen was not charged with wrongdoing, but prosecutors have said in court papers that the "owner" of the hedge fund signed off on Martoma's recommendation to sell the shares of Elan and Wyeth. A spokesman for SAC Capital said last week that "Mr. Cohen and SAC are confident that they have acted appropriately and will continue to cooperate with the government's inquiry."

At a 13-minute hearing in U.S. district court in Manhattan on Monday, Martoma spoke only once, answering "yes, your honor" to a judge's question. He did not enter a plea.

Magistrate Judge James Cott on Monday agreed to a proposed $5 million bail package for Martoma, who has been free on similar bail conditions since appearing in a Florida court after his arrest on November 20.

Martoma's wife, Rosemary, attended the hearing and agreed to serve as one of three co-signers for Martoma's bail.

Charles Stillman, Martoma's lawyer, has said he is confident his client will be exonerated. Stillman told reporters gathered outside the courtroom Monday that "we took care of business today and we'll be back another day."

The Martomas walked to the courthouse exit hand in hand.

Martoma, who began using Mathew as his first name in the middle of his professional life instead of Ajai, worked for CR Intrinsic in Stamford, Connecticut, until 2010. Before becoming a healthcare stock analyst, he worked in the field of bioethics, serving as deputy director of the National Human Genome Research Institute's Office of Genome Ethics, according to biographical information attached to a paper he wrote for a Harvard Law journal. He attended Harvard Law School but left before graduating, opting instead for an MBA from Stanford University.

He is the fifth person associated with SAC Capital, one of the most influential hedge funds, to be charged with insider trading in either a criminal or civil proceeding.

In a criminal complaint, authorities said Martoma spoke in July 2008 to the "hedge fund owner" - Cohen - and recommended selling shares of Elan and Wyeth before a negative announcement on clinical trial results for an Alzheimer's drug jointly developed by the two companies.

U.S. securities regulators, who have filed civil insider-trading charges against Martoma, contend he obtained confidential tips from Sidney Gilman, who was chair of a committee to monitor patient safety during the Alzheimer's drug's clinical trial.

Gilman, an 80-year old neurology professor at the University of Michigan, is now cooperating with prosecutors after agreeing to pay a $186,781 disgorgement. A lawyer for Gilman declined to comment last week.

The Securities and Exchange Commission complaint said Gilman worked as a consultant for a so-called expert network. The SEC's complaint did not name the network, but a disclosure for a 2008 paper Gilman wrote in the journal Neurology stated that Gilman was a consultant for the Gerson Lehrman Group. Hedge funds use such networks to gain insight into various industries.

According to the criminal complaint, Gilman scheduled meetings and phone calls with Martoma that allowed him to pass on new information quickly about the drug trial.

Gilman has also worked as a consultant for the private equity firm Longitude Capital and for the contract research firm PPD Development, according to the 2008 disclosure.

The judge set a December 26 hearing date for Martoma to return to court, but Stillman said he expected it to be pushed back to a later date.

The case is USA v. Martoma, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 12-mag-2985.
