More news from companies letting large numbers of their staff go has hit the wire today, the latest?casualties?being?employees?of Lionhead?Studios. Lionhead is a British developer currently owned by Microsoft. They?re probably most known for their Fable and Black & White series, as well as having Peter Molyneux be a figurehead at the company until recently when he left the company to join 22cans.

Lionhead won?t disclose the exact number of?employees?let go, but assure the media that the number amounts to less to 10% of the entire staff at the company. The representatives also assured readers that they were working closely with the people let go in an attempt to leave them in the best possible position to move their careers forward including Rare and Soho Productions.

The number of jobs being reduced at the developer could be?attributed?to the poor sales of their recent release: Fable: The Journey. The Kinect game released this month has been met with a lukewarm reception and not what you would call gleaming reviews from the major reviewer publications, it getting a 63% Metacritic rating.

However, it is normal in some?development?companies?for the number of staff to fluctuate throughout the development cycle of a game. Lionhead themselves have said that it is common for smaller head counts to kick start the development of a new came before taking on more people to power through development.

It isn?t all doom and gloom though, there are more young people trying to get into game development than ever before and with so many fresh and eager minds looking to get involved in video game development, it looks like Lionhead will have no problem filling the 100 positions they hope to fill between now and June of next year.
