Career Advice from LA Creative Fashion Stylign Tutor Siobhan Mc ...

With the CAO results finally out this week, we enlist the advice on the fashion industry from fashion expert and LA Fashion Styling tutor Siobhan Mc Hugh. For those of you passionate about pursuing a career in the fashion indsutry Siobhan sheds an insight into how she got where she is today.

Siobh?n McHugh, an acclaimed fashion stylist based in Dublin Ireland, is the managing director of the esteemed styling company, Styleuphoria (www.styleuphoria.com). Styleuphoria supplies personal styling services to clients throughout Ireland, editorial styling creation, and a host to fashion events in boutiques and departments stores around Ireland.

Who are the top 3 influential people in your career?

  • Audrey Hepburn ? Love her style and her positive quotes! My fav quote from Audrey is ?Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I?m possible?.
  • Gok Wan ? Introduced a honest loving approach to dressing women. Refreshing after Trinny and Susannah had all of their clients in tears!
  • Lets count these as one ? The three F?s ? Family, Friends and Fianc?!

How you got to where you are today?

While some consider you to be ?lucky? to be working in your dream job; I say luck has a tiny amount to do with it, where as hard work has a lot to do with it!! I have trained through both?practical and?academic methods for years to build my career; I completed many courses such as a BA in Business and Marketing, Diploma in Image and Fashion Styling, Certificate in Make Up and Beauty, Fashion Design, Photography and, Start Your Own Business course but to name a few!

I have worked in many fashion related jobs commencing with a sales assistant, managing, merchandising, personal shopping, fashion journalism such as Cosmo Australia and creating & teaching fashion styling courses. I interned in many fashion related areas through out college and assisted as many fashion stylists as possible. I also trained myself up on areas that could assist in being self employed before taking the leap such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Website design. When the time felt right I set up my fashion styling company, Styleuphoria.com. Styleuphoria provides the personal shopping service for Liffey Valley, has a fashion and beauty website (www.styleuphoria.com), regularly involved in fashion journalism and editorials in Irish publications and I also teach the fashion styling course for LA Creative Academy.

What was on your CAO?

Business & marketing was on my CAO. I wanted to do something creative in college and felt marketing could be the route to take ? however it was not as creative as I hoped! On the day of my graduation with a BA in Business & Marketing I thought to myself ?Oh it?s a bit late now but no I don?t want to work in marketing? so I went back to college and trained myself as a fashion stylist! (I would learn at a later stage it is so valuable to have a business and marketing degree when working as a self employed fashion stylist).

Best piece of advice you were ever given?

Don?t dream your life; live your dreams.

Siobhan will be teaching the LA Creative Fashion Styling Course on a full time basis from 21st January 2013 and part time from 22nd October 2012.
