Top 10 Mental Health Apps | World of Psychology
With so many apps on the market, it?s hard to know which are useful.
Many are designed by software developers instead of psychologists, without scientific testing. They range from beneficial, to harmless but useless, to bordering on fraudulent.
The apps selected for this list make no hucksterish claims and are based on established treatments. Progressive Muscle Relaxation, for example, has been used for a century and is likely just as effective in this new medium. Knowledge from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy enrich two apps on this list. Others mix solid information with ingenuity.
Don?t forget to download the free PsychCentral app to keep up with the latest mental health information.
1. BellyBio
Free app that teaches a deep breathing technique useful in fighting anxiety and stress. A simple interface uses biofeedback to monitor your breathing. Sounds cascade with the movements of your belly, in rhythms reminiscent of waves on a beach. Charts also let you know how you?re doing. A great tool when you need to slow down and breathe.
2. Operation Reach Out
Literally a lifesaving app, this free intervention tool helps people who are having suicidal thoughts to reassess their thinking and get help. Recommended by followers of @unsuicide, who report that this app has helped in suicidal crises. Developed by the military, but useful to all. Worth a download even if you?re not suicidal. You never know if you might need it.
3. eCBT Calm
Provides a set of tools to help you evaluate personal stress and anxiety, challenge distorted thoughts, and learn relaxation skills that have been scientifically validated in research on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Lots of background and useful information along with step-by-step guides.
4. Deep Sleep with Andrew Johnson
Getting enough sleep is one of the foundations of mental health. A personal favorite I listen to all the time, this straightforward app features a warm, gentle voice guiding listeners through a Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) session and into sleep. Features long or short induction options, and an alarm.
5. WhatsMyM3
A three minute depression and anxiety screen. Validated questionnaires assess symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and PTSD, and combine into a score that indicates whether or not your life is impacted significantly by a mood disorder, recommending a course of action. The app keeps a history of test results, to help you track your progress.
6. DBT Diary Card and Skills Coach
Based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) developed by psychologist Marsha Linehan, this app is a rich resource of self-help skills, reminders of the therapy principles, and coaching tools for coping. Created by a therapist with years of experience in the practice, this app is not intended to replace a professional but helps people reinforce their treatment.
7. Optimism
Track your moods, keep a journal, and chart your recovery progress with this comprehensive tool for depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders. One of the most popular mood tracking apps available, with plenty of features. Free.
8. iSleepEasy
A calm female voice helps you quell anxieties and take the time to relax and sleep, in an array of guided meditations. Separately controlled voice and music tracks, flexible lengths, and an alarm. Includes a special wee hours rescue track, and tips for falling asleep. Developed by Meditation Oasis, who offer an great line of relaxation apps.
9. Magic Window ? Living Pictures
Not technically a mental health app, it makes no miraculous claims about curbing anxiety. However, there is independent research indicating that taking breaks and getting exposure to nature, even in videos, can reduce stress. This app offers an assortment of peaceful, ambient nature scenes from beautiful spots around the world.
10. Relax Melodies
A popular free relaxation sound and music app. Mix and match nature sounds with new age music; it?s lovely to listen to birds in the rain while a piano softly plays.
Do you have a favorite app not on the list?

Irish cellphone entrepreneur banks on a smarter Haiti
PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) - When Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien set about building a cellphone company in the western hemisphere's poorest country, there was no shortage of skeptics.
Six years later O'Brien's company Digicel is the largest private investor in Haiti and has 4.8 million users, about half the population. It is a rare beacon of entrepreneurship in a country still struggling to rebuild after the 2010 earthquake.
O'Brien's ambitious plans for Digicel are part of his bullish vision for Haiti which stands in sharp contrast to the usually gloomy forecasts for a nation crippled by perpetual political turmoil and natural disasters.
Promotion of homegrown entrepreneurship is rare in Haiti, where the government and banks have done little to stimulate investment and a small business elite has traditionally profited from import monopolies that stifle local production.
On a typical whirlwind visit shortly before Christmas, O'Brien, 54, flew into Haiti from New York on his corporate jet for a monthly Digicel board meeting. He then hosted a gala celebrating Digicel's 'Entrepreneur of the Year', a televised event he imported from Ireland to inspire small business.
Six feet tall with white hair and ruddy cheeks, O'Brien is easy to spot among the crowd of mostly local business people and dignitaries, including President Michel Martelly.
"Haiti needs more people like you," Martelly said. "If it wasn't for Denis, we'd all be sitting here alone."
PHONES FOR THE POOR
The Digicel Group is a privately-held company founded by O'Brien in 2001 and headquartered in Jamaica, with 13 million customers in 31 emerging markets, mostly in the Caribbean and Pacific regions.
O'Brien holds 94 percent of Digicel shares and made Forbes' billionaires list last year (No. 205) with a net worth of $5 billion. He models himself on Sudanese-born British billionaire Mo Ibrahim, founder of Celtel, an Africa-wide cellphone network, and India-based Sunil Mittal, founder of Bharti Airtel.
Ibrahim sold Celtel in 2005 for $3.4 billion and now runs the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to encourage better governance in Africa, while Mittal also runs his own foundation.
"They proved the concept that you can have people with very little disposable income in real terms, but who want a phone and they'll pay you for it, and you can afford to build up quite a large network," O'Brien told Reuters.
Digicel is now looking to enter Myanmar, a country of around 60 million people that has one of the lowest mobile penetration rates in the world, with only 3 percent of the population owning a phone in 2011, according to the World Bank.
Digicel says it had revenue of about $2.5 billion in the year to March 2012, with Haiti leading the way, generating $439 million.
O'Brien, who is nonresident in Ireland for tax purposes, is not without his critics back home in Ireland where he launched his first mobile phone company and also is the main shareholder in the country's largest media company.
His purchase of an Irish mobile phone license in the 1990s led to a lengthy public inquiry that found "beyond doubt" that a government minister had imparted substantive information to O'Brien in securing the license.
O'Brien has said the 14-year-old inquiry was fundamentally flawed because it was based on the opinions and theories of one judge and his legal team. He later sold the company, Esat Telecom, before launching Digicel.
The company's arrival in Haiti in 2006 was a rare example of foreign investment in a country more used to dependence on foreign aid handouts. Digicel's shiny headquarters was inaugurated a year before the 2010 quake and was one of the few big buildings to withstand it virtually intact.
Two existing cellphone companies which offered spotty, more expensive services were quickly overtaken as Digicel invested in a national infrastructure and offered handsets for as little as $7 with low rates for its mostly pre-paid customer base.
"Denis revolutionized the communications sector. Before cellphones were a luxury and now they are a must," said Haiti's tourism minister, Stephanie Villedrouin.
'NATURAL-BORN' TALENT
O'Brien's investments in Haiti go far beyond telephony.
Last month, he broke ground on Haiti's first Marriott hotel and Digicel's charity foundation is spending millions to build 150 schools across the country for 90,000 students.
His approach has won acclaim from the likes of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who heads the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) and is also the United Nations special envoy to Haiti.
O'Brien coordinates CGI's Haiti Action Network, whose members have committed more than $350 million to education, infrastructure and business-development projects.
"The CGI program in Haiti is considered one of the best. It's really because of Denis's strong leadership," said Anne Hastings, director of Fonkoze, a micro-credit finance institution in Haiti. "He sets goals and people have to achieve them. That's unusual in Haiti."
His first non-profit investment in Haiti was the capital's historic Iron Market, the heart of downtown commercial activity, which O'Brien spent millions to rebuild after the earthquake.
"All the problems in Haiti are fixable, you just need the right project skills," he said. "You have to harness the people and show them how to do it. There's so much talent here, people who are creative and inventive."
To prove his point, Digicel has moved its call center for the French-speaking Caribbean from affluent Martinique to Haiti.
On his first visit to Haiti, O'Brien was struck by the streets crowded with vendors. "You have all these entrepreneurs all over this city. They are natural-born sellers," he said.
By celebrating enterprise on the TV show, a highly-produced affair with crane-mounted cameras, lighting, and dry ice and confetti for the winner, O'Brien hopes to inspire a new business culture of import substitution. This year's finalists included a coffee milling business, a solar energy company, a fish exporter, and local artisans and fashion designers.
"Hopefully somebody is sitting at home or under a tree and says ?I got an idea,'" he said. "Instead of importing rice, grow rice. Instead of importing chickens, breed chickens. Instead of importing eggs, lay eggs."
O'Brien's next goal: launching a smartphone revolution in Haiti and offering mobile banking to the poor. Digicel is investing in extra bandwidth this year to handle a 4G network upgrade, raising its total investment in Haiti to more than $600 million. "What we're trying to have is a First World telecommunications network in a developing economy, and most of the time that doesn't happen," he said.
Digicel relies on Asian firms such as Samsung to continue lowering prices thanks to cheap Taiwanese semi-conductors. "We can buy a smartphone for $70 today. In 2013 it will be $30," he said, predicting prices would hit $10 within a couple of years.
Since gobbling up its main competitor, Comcel, last year, Digicel admits it has had service issues but says they are being addressed. Some suggest it may have too cozy a relationship with the government, creating a virtual state within a state, rivaling the influence of the United Nations or the World Bank.
Indeed, Digicel is Haiti's largest taxpayer and its main building houses the offices of the mayor of Port-au-Prince as well as the Red Cross. "Digicel's building is where I come to give blood," says Cyril Pressoir, a local businessman whose father owns a travel company. "Should it be like this? Shouldn't we be able to stand on our own feet? Sure, but he (O'Brien) gets things done."
EDUCATING HAITI
O'Brien, whose mother was a human rights activist in Ireland and who is a father of four, has spent $25 million on development projects through the foundation.
"Our foundation is every bit as important as our technical department," O'Brien said. "Most multi-billion dollar companies rob the country blind. We like to make a good profit but sleep well at night."
His work is dotted all over Haiti. "Denis is always the first to respond if we need help," said Gena Heraty, an Irish woman who has worked in Haiti for almost 20 years and heads a special needs program for poor children run by the charity Friends of the Orphans.
When Heraty told him about a girl who suffered brain damage when a wall fell on her during the earthquake, O'Brien built a house for the girl and her mother and bought a 'tap-tap' - a traditional Haitian pick-up truck taxi - to help out the father.
The morning after the business gala, O'Brien drove out to the rural community of Saut d'Eau for the inauguration of one of the new schools built by his foundation.
The school's nine classrooms, computer lab, auditorium, cafeteria, library and basketball court cost $326,000.
The Digicel Foundation has built 87 schools so far, at an average cost of around $180,000. It does not pay operating costs so is careful to pick communities that are committed to running the school.
Teachers at the Saut d'Eau school earn $60-65 a month and school fees are $10 a year. The school was founded by Paul Calisme, a 59-year-old Haitian ex-pat who runs it with savings from his job at a Connecticut car wash. "I left my town 23 years ago but I had a dream," he said, noting that about 25 percent of local children do not attend school.
At a simple ceremony, children in plaid uniforms sang a welcome song ending with a shout of "Long live Haiti. Long live Digicel."

United becomes first US airline to offer overseas WiFi with satellite-equipped 747
Lufthansa's been pulling (relatively) speedy Ku-band satellite internet from the heavens for a bit over two years, but now trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific WiFi has finally made its way to a US-based carrier. United, the first US airline to fly the Dreamliner, announced today that a Boeing 747-400 is currently flying around the globe with a constant connection, letting passengers hop online during any portion of the flight -- taxi, takeoff and landing being are a few obvious exceptions, but there's no requirement that the aircraft operate within range of air-to-ground transmitters, a la Gogo.
The installed equipment, manufactured by Panasonic, will provide two tiers of service: Standard, which will range in price from $4 to $15, and a speedier Accelerated flavor, with pricing between $6 and $20. The service, which has also been installed on a pair of regional Airbus A319s, isn't as speedy as ViaSat's future Ka-band offering, but it's a step above what's currently on board. United also announced plans to bring WiFi to its A320, along with Boeing 737, 757, 767, 777 and 787 aircraft -- the airline expects installation to be completed on 300 planes by the end of this year. Still missing on many United flights, however, are power jacks -- it's difficult to take advantage of in-flight WiFi if your laptop is dead.
Update: Satellite WiFi historians may be familiar with Boeing's failed Connexion service, which promised a similar solution but dissolved prematurely in late 2006. United's implementation is the first of its kind for a US carrier.

Mainers Like Cats? Lots of Cats
Maine has the second highest number of cat owners. Vermont tops the list.? In Maine more than 46% of homes have a cat and in Vermont it is just under 50%! New Hampshire was tenth on the list. So, Northern New England likes its puddy cats. As for my preference, dogs, the top dog-owning state is Arkansas. The lowest is Massachusetts.

U.S. college posts alert of campus shooting, two reported dead
By Steve Robrahn
LOUISVILLE, Ky | Wed Jan 16, 2013 9:16am IST
LOUISVILLE, Ky (Reuters) - Two people were killed and a third wounded when gunfire broke out in the parking lot of a community college in the eastern Kentucky mountains, authorities said.
Two people were being held, including the alleged shooter who opened fire with a semiautomatic pistol on Tuesday afternoon at the Hazard Community and Technical College, about 90 miles (145 kms) southeast of Lexington, police said.
Hazard Police Chief Minor Allen told a news conference initial indications were that the shooting was a result of a domestic conflict and there were no signs anyone involved had any connections with the college.
The United States is still on edge about gun violence a month after a lone gunman killed 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school in a rampage that stunned the nation and has fueled a heated national debate over gun control.
Police described the dead in Hazard as a man in his 50s and a woman in her 20s to early 30s. A female in her teens was injured and taken to the University of Kentucky hospital in Lexington. The identities of the victims and those taken into custody were not being released, police said.
The college president, Steve Griner, told reporters that activities and classes for the school's 4,700 students were being canceled on Wednesday because of the investigation.
The campus was placed under a security lockdown after the shooting, which was lifted later. Police searched campus buildings to ensure everyone was safe.
In a separate shooting in St. Louis, Missouri, a student armed with a pistol opened fire at a downtown college before turning the gun on himself. A school employee struck by gunfire in that shooting was expected to survive, as was the armed student, police said. Massachusetts Educator Ghazi Darkazalli to Serve As Florida Poly Provost
Published: Monday, January 14, 2013 at 4:41 p.m.
Last Modified: Monday, January 14, 2013 at 4:41 p.m.
LAKELAND | Florida Polytechnic University made its first academic hire Monday with the selection of a Massachusetts educator with extensive global experience to serve as its provost.
A selection committee spoke with four candidates for the interim job of vice president of academic affairs before deciding upon Ghazi Darkazalli of Bedford, Mass.
"I am really pleased with the selection," said committee member Don Wilson, a lawyer from Homeland. "He had incredible knowledge and experience, and he has good energy."
One candidate, Peter French of Lakewood Ranch, already had made another commitment and pulled his name from consideration. But he came to Orlando anyway and shared his ideas about the polytechnic.
Darkazalli was the first candidate interviewed in a meeting room at the Hyatt Regency Orlando Airport on Monday morning. He most recently served as president and CEO of Marian Court College in Swampscott, Mass., a private college sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy.
He has a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and extensive global consulting affiliations. He said he is available to get to work very soon and has no problem with working part- time initially.
Asked about hiring professors at the university when tenure is unlikely to be offered he said he prefers that. Tenure, he said, is not the key to hiring a talented group of profes-sors.
"It's what you have to offer," he said.
Wilson said Darkazalli has a rare blend of experience in the business world and with academics.
"He is going to be invaluable," Wilson said. "He's got a business background in the STEM areas, and has had some very successful business ventures, as well as the academic background."
Candidates were interviewed by Florida Poly board members Sandra Featherman, Richard Hallion and Wilson, along with Florida Poly Chief Operating Officer Ava Parker.
The under-construction university currently has a board and a handful of employees, including Parker, but this position marks the first academic hire.
"He came across as a self-starter, prepared to work with an institution, he is prepared to roll up his sleeves," said Parker. "He has ideas about how to distinguish the university."
He is flexible and ready to get on with the start-up, Parker said. "He understands the urgency of getting this going."
The hire is a milestone for the fledgling university.
"It's a big deal," Parker said. "I am pleased with it."
The details of his compensation will be worked out soon in the form of a contract, Parker said.
The selection of an interim provost was of particular significance because Florida Poly will be seeking accreditation as a start-up university.
Chairman Robert Gidel has said the new university will seek to organize a curriculum program, faculty and governance structure to be implemented as soon as it is practical, with the goal of accreditation by the end of 2016.

Chinese workers abducted in Sudan
China's Foreign Ministry says four Chinese workers have been abducted in Sudan's North Darfur region by unidentified gunmen.
Monday's statement says the men are employees of the China Railway 18th Bureau Group who were building a road in North Darfur just outside the regional capital of El-Fasher.
Sudan's state news agency SUNA has blamed the abduction on a Darfur rebel movement, but it stopped short of naming which group.
The news agency has reported that five Sudanese were also abducted along with the four Chinese workers, among them drivers and engineers.
The government says it dispatched 18 military vehicles to pursue the abductors.
China is a major oil buyer from Sudan and invests heavily there.

Fireflies' bumpy abdomens may lead to brighter LEDs
Scientists who evidently spend too much time with fireflies have managed to put all that bug-watching to good use: developing brighter LEDs. One problem with that tech is that a lot of the light gets reflected back into the device due to the way photons travel through LED materials, causing them to lose efficiency. But researchers from the University of Namur in Belgium noticed that the misshapen abdominal scales on fireflies act to prevent reflection, letting more light from the luminous insect's "lantern" shine out. Scientists in Canada took it a step further by doping standard gallium-nitride LEDs with a similar material, and found that light transmission increased by 55 percent. They claimed that such a process could be done to "nearly every commercially available LED," which could one day bring insect-inspired energy savings to commercial products.

Asia stocks higher on China recovery optimism
BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Monday on optimism that China's economic recovery is firmly taking root.
Many analysts expect China's fourth quarter and 2012 growth figures due Friday to show the world's No. 2 economy continuing to bounce back from its worst slump since the 2008 financial crisis.
Sentiment improved last week after Japan announced a $224 billion stimulus package to boost its recession- and deflation-mired economy. A strong economic recovery has eluded Japan for more than 20 years since the bursting of its financial bubble in the early 1990s.
China, meanwhile, reported improving exports and imports last week, a sign of higher demand both inside and outside the country. More signs of improvement are expected when China releases a slew of data on Friday, including factory output, investment and retail sales.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.7 percent to 23,421.25. South Korea's Kospi added 0.3 percent to 2,002.22 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.2 percent to 4,718.90.
Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index gained 2.1 percent to 2,289.23 while the Shenzhen Composite Index for China's second, smaller stock market jumped 2.5 percent to 908.20.
Japan's financial markets were closed for a public holiday.
Dariusz Kowalczyk of Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said China's growth likely picked up in the fourth quarter of 2012 to 7.9 percent from 7.4 percent in the three months ended in September. He expects first quarter growth in 2013 to hit 8.5 percent. He said such figures should put to rest worries that China's economy might be in for a hard landing.
"Risks have diminished both externally and domestically, and if they rebound, China has sufficient resources to manage them, so we are upbeat that a relapse will not occur," he said in an email.
Still, a bobble in trade could cause a reversal, while inflation pressure is rising because of poor winter harvests, which would make it harder for Beijing to embark on new stimulus measures without pushing prices up more.
Analysts at Societe Generale have not ruled out a hard landing, which they define as real GDP growth falling below 6 percent, partly because of China's vulnerability to trade shocks.
Among individual stocks, South Korea's SK Telecom soared 5.8 percent while Hyundai Heavy Industries fell 2.3 percent. In Shanghai, gold retailer Lao Feng Xiang Co. Ltd. jumped 6 percent. China AVIC Avionics Equipment soared 8.5 percent.
In the U.S., stock indexes were mixed Friday as company earnings reports started to come in. The Standard & Poor's 500 index dipped slightly below its highest close in five years, which it reached the day before.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.1 percent to 13,488.43. The S&P 500 fell marginally to 1,472.05. The Nasdaq composite index rose 0.1 percent to 3,125.63.
Benchmark oil for February delivery was up 59 cents to $94.15 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 26 cents to finish at $93.56 a barrel in New York on Friday.
In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3391 from $1.3338 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 89.54 yen from 89.20 yen.

Ex-postal workers' union head Sombrotto dies at 89
MANHASSET, N.Y. (AP) -- Vincent R. Sombrotto, a labor leader who served as president of the National Association of Letter Carriers for 24 years, has died. He was 89.
The NALC announced on its website that Sombrotto died Thursday. Fairchild Sons Funeral Home in Manhasset, which is handling the arrangements, confirmed his death to The Associated Press on Sunday.
Sombrotto joined the then-Post Office Department in 1947 as a part-time carrier. As a letter carrier at New York's Grand Central Station, he took charge of the 1970 postal strike to protest poor working conditions and wages so low that some carriers qualified for welfare. President Richard Nixon called in 25,000 troops to deliver the mail in the city after the carriers went on strike.
The walkout eventually spread to 100 cities and involved more than 200,000 postal workers. It led to the creation of the United States Postal Service.
In 1978, Sombrotto was elected as the NALC's 16th president, a position he held leading the union's 300,000 members until his retirement in 2002.
He played a key role in helping to reform the Hatch Act, a law that prohibited partisan political activities by federal employees.
"Vince's long tenure and tireless work for this union, at both the local and national levels, has left a lasting, positive impact on all the men and women who have carried the mail since the Great Postal Strike, and on those who will do so in the decades yet to come," NALC President Fredric V. Rolando said.
He is survived by his wife, Rae, seven children and 14 grandchildren. A funeral Mass is planned for Monday morning in Port Washington.
Donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

ST. ANTON, Austria (AP) ? Alice McKennis of the United States earned her first World Cup victory by winning a downhill Saturday, and Lindsey Vonn was sixth after returning from a nearly monthlong break.
McKennis had never finished in the top three before coming down the Karl Schranz course in 1 minute, 14.62 seconds to beat Daniela Merighetti of Italy by 0.07.
"I am overwhelmed, extremely happy and excited," McKennis said. "It's definitely a dream come true."
Anna Fenninger of Austria was third, and overall World Cup leader Tina Maze of Slovenia finished fourth.
Wearing bib. No. 4, McKennis used the advantage of an early start on a course that was softened by fresh snow during the past two days.
"I felt pretty good and I felt I had nailed it, but it's hard running so early as you don't know," McKennis said. "It was pretty nerve-wrecking waiting for the next hour. I was just freaking out the whole time."
Some racers, including fellow Americans Vonn, Julia Mancuso and Stacey Cook, clocked at least one faster split time. But no one matched McKennis' strong finish.
Vonn, the defending overall champion who returned to the circuit after recovering from an intestinal illness, was 0.34 behind, while her American teammate Laurenne Ross was fifth, 0.32 off the lead.
"I am extremely happy for our whole team, Alice winning today, and Laurenne," Vonn said. "The strength of our whole team has been fun to watch. It makes me happy to be part of such a great group of girls. The success we're having this year is pretty incredible."
After the top racers came down and she had all but secured the victory, the 23-year-old McKennis walked through the finish area looking at the stands, searching for her father Greg.
"He wasn't really much of a racer, but he put a lot of work in getting me here," said McKennis, who grew up at a ranch in Glenwood Springs, Colo. "I wouldn't be here without him, so a lot of credit to him. It's great having him here."
McKennis became the fifth American winner of a World Cup race this season after Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Steven Nyman and Ted Ligety, who took a giant slalom in Adelboden, Switzerland, just moments after McKennis won Saturday in Austria.
"It's been so exciting, especially watching the men's speed team get back up there," McKennis said. "And obviously Ted winning the race today, that's awesome. And Mikaela, she's incredible at such a young age (17), pretty inspiring."
McKennis said "we all push each other, we all want to be the best ... It's been a goal for every single one of us to get on the podium and we've almost done that with the speed team now."
Vonn won two downhill races this season but failed to finish the third, in St. Moritz, Switzerland, where Lara Gut of Switzerland placed first. Days later, Vonn went back to the United States to get her physical strength back after her illness and returned for training on snow in Austria last week.
"I feel great. I am really happy to be back. I love the adrenaline at the start and going fast again. I really felt good," Vonn said after the race. "These were definitely tough conditions. The snow was definitely not great, but the course workers did a great job on it. I almost didn't think that it was possible to run today because there was just too much snow."
Vonn and Cook, who finished 22nd, remained 1-2 in the downhill standings.
"I definitely made some mistakes. But in general I felt good and I felt like my skiing was where it should be. I felt strong," Vonn said. "Of course, it's downhill so I am hoping to be on the podium, but considering the conditions I am extremely happy with this result. You make one mistake and you are easily in 20th or 30th place. So I think, all things considered, it was a real good performance."
As snow at the top of the course was too soft, organizers decided to use the lower super-G start, shortening the initial 2.2-kilometer long downhill course by 436 meters.
"It was definitely a disadvantage to start later," said Vonn, who started 17th. "The later numbers had a hard time except for Merighetti, she skied amazing. This was a great result for my first race back."
A women's super-G on the same course is scheduled for Sunday.

ASHRAE Seeks Input on Revisions to Data Centers in 90.1 Energy Standard Scope
Addendum cs to ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010, ?Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings,? is open for advisory public review from January 4 to February 3. The addendum proposes changes to definitions for computer rooms and data centers in Standard 90.1 to create a distinction between facilities covered by 90.1 and those which are intended to be under the scope of ASHRAE Standard 90.4P, Energy Standard for Data Centers and Telecommunications Buildings, proposed by?ASHRAE?in late 2012.
The definition proposed for computer rooms more closely aligns with ASHRAE Standard 100, ?Energy Efficiency in Existing Buildings,? and the U.S. Energy Information Administration?s Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS). In addition, the definition is consistent with Uptime Institutes? ?Tier Standard: Topology? and the Telecommunications Industry Association ANSI/TIA-942 class rating for low-risk Tier I data centers. High risk data centers such as those designed as Tier II or greater per ANSI/TIA942 or ones with mechanical cooling system redundancy are expected to be covered by the 90.4P standard now under development.
Steve Skalko, chair of the Standard 90.1 committee, said with the development of Standard 90.4P feedback is needed from the industry to clarify the scope and definitions of each standard. Energy conservation requirements for high risk data centers, initially covered by Standard 90.1-2010, are expected to be detailed in the 90.4P standard. Computer rooms, which can include low-risk data centers, would remain under the scope of Standard 90.1.
?The costs and approaches used in determining appropriate HVAC applications used to achieve energy efficiency are different,? Skalko said.
Computer rooms, which by the proposed definitions include low-risk data centers, are usually associated with electronic equipment spaces that are not considered risks and therefore money is typically not spent to install levels of component and systems redundancies. Computer rooms may be ancillary functions and add loads in a larger building and often are served from the same central cooling plants.
Computer rooms are designed to provide local data processing and information storage for in-house end users and clients, which the owner has deemed very low risk. Risk choices are made to reduce total life-cycle costs associated with not only system selection and operation, but potential failures, business interruptions, continuity plans and overall company specific business model features like staffing requirements, according to Skalko.
By comparison, data centers designed as Tier II or greater per ANSI/TIA942 or ones with mechanical cooling system redundancy carry more risk, he said. Industry studies indicate downtime associated with such risk can cost tens of thousands of dollars a minute, with the potential to negate both past energy savings and future business viability in a single act. The demand for data centers has grown, as the electronic equipment needs have evolved with the huge demand for data processing services and storage in the age of digital devices.
A data center has the function to support the electronic equipment that commonly provides services to outside or external clients, hence the heightened awareness of risk and risk mitigation approaches employed. Data centers can support everything from an individual enterprise all the way to hosting services on the internet and must provide maximum operational run time on a 24/7 basis. These facilities are built with multiple levels of component redundancy, providing at least an N+1 mechanical cooling capacity redundancy, if not greater, as well as operational resiliency (increased staffing hours and expertise), Skalko said.

Waiting for that PERFECT estate plan
?We aren?t quite ready to finish our estate plan yet?.?
?We are waiting to finish one other thing first?.?
?As soon as we finish our taxes we will get it done?.?
?We want to see how our son behaves the next few months and then we?ll finish?.?
Clearly no time is ?perfect? for finishing an estate plan and getting your wills, trust, powers of attorney, deeds and other documents into place. However, many clients feel they can wait for all the stars to be?aligned and then, and only then, can they finish their estate plan.
The problem is obvious? we don?t know when we are going to die. Stuff happens.
The key to estate planning is remembering that something is almost always better than nothing. It is a rare case that a family is better off with the current estate plan than a new and improved estate plan and there is certainly no case where the family is better off with no estate plan.
I encourage people to finish their estate plan by giving them free amendments for one year after signing. Change your mind all you want but let?s get the basics in place now!
Let me know if I can help you end the procrastination treadmill! ?-John

Eyes-on with Hyundai's in-car tech for 2014: CloudCar, MirrorLink and a 9.2-inch display
Many who live in North America wouldn't put Hyundai at the forefront of in-car technology, but the Korean au hoping to change that reputation by 2014 with a more internet- and mobile-savvy platform. We had an opportunity to peek at some of those components at the automaker's CES booth. CloudCar calls out for attention as the most distinctive: going beyond the existing BlueLink system, it pairs the car's infotainment unit with at least a Jelly Bean-equipped Android phone to put an always-online interface in front of the driver. The early CloudCar example runs on a very simple interface with options like Google Maps navigation, media playback and Google contacts on the left. It's built for multitasking and will keep directions going even as we're firing up NPR or sharing to Facebook (hopefully, while stopped). While it's not exceptionally deep, it appears suited to the need-it-quick nature of real driving, with shortcuts like directions to the office or a call to a favorite contact.
Other additions aren't quite as conspicuous, but could still be very welcome when we see it in future cabins. Hyundai is one of the first car builders that we know of to embrace MirrorLink, echoing whatever's on a phone's display (in this case, Android) through MHL; there's a companion Android app with a car-sized interface for navigation, hands-free calls and music. Hardware should get an upgrade as well through a premium system with a 9.2-inch, 720p display. The company isn't quite ready to narrow down which vehicles will see what upgrades, although we're told the early strategy may split CloudCar and MirrorLink between different model lines. If you're willing to accept that the technology could change in a year's time, you can get a peek at the future in the gallery below.

Google launches free Wi-Fi network in New York
Chelsea, home to Google's NYC HQ, will get a free Wi-Fi network, Google and NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg announced today.?
By Matthew Shaer / January 8, 2013
EnlargeNew York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced at a press conference today that Google will help to launch a free Wi-Fi network in the Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea. The project will be the largest free network in the city, and a boon to the dozens of tech start-ups and Internet companies, including Google, that call Chelsea home.?

According to CNN, the network cost $115,000 to get off the ground; annual maintenance costs will total $45,000. Google is reportedly responsible for two-thirds of all expenses; the remainder falls to?Chelsea Improvement Company, a community group.?
"It's not very expensive at all ? just a smidgeon of what Sandy cost," US Senator Chuck Schumer said at a press conference in Manhattan today. "The mayor and I said maybe we could get this done for all of New York. We look forward to the day when all of New York has free Wi-Fi."
In related news, Google is currently testing a high-speed Internet network called Google Fiber in the Kansas City area. Locals can get their hands on the service, which is said to be?100 times faster than services offered by other providers, for $70 a month. $120 a month, meanwhile, will buy you?Google Fiber TV, a package that includes a range of broadcast networks and a?Nexus 7 tablet for use as a remote control.?
So hey, is there any chance New York could see a Google Fiber pilot program of its own? Well, over at Web Pro News, Zach Walton highlights a recent job posting for a "Google Fiber Sales Rep for New York City." From the advert: "The Google Fiber Sales Representative be a part of a team to evangelizes Google Fiber services to small and medium business and multi unit dwellings."
But it's doubtful this is much more than some initial groundwork ? Google has stressed that much of its energy remains focused on the Kansas City rollout. Our advice, New Yorkers? Don't hold your breath.?
