Johnson defends flyweight title beating Moraga

SEATTLE (AP) ? Demetrious Johnson used an armbar on John Moraga late in the fifth round and successfully defended his UFC flyweight championship with a submission victory Saturday night before a partisan hometown crowd.

Johnson, making the second defense of the flyweight crown, controlled most of the fight, then ended it at 3:43 of the fifth round, bending Moraga's right arm to the point referee Herb Dean stopped the fight. Johnson (18-2-1) leaped to his feet with four spinning kicks in the center of the ring to celebrate his title defense.

The co-main event saw young Canadian star Rory MacDonald (15-1) take a unanimous decision over Jake Ellenberger (29-7) in a welterweight fight that left the crowd cascading boos after the much-anticipated matchup failed to live up to its billing. But MacDonald's strategy of avoiding Ellenberger's big punches worked and ran his winning streak to five.

In other fights on the main card, Robbie Lawler used a huge kick to floor Bobby Voelker in a second-round knockout. Liz Carmouche also had a second-round victory, stopping Brazil's Jessica Andrade in her UFC debut.

It was a dominant performance for Johnson, fighting less than an hour from his home in Parkland. From the start, Johnson had the home crowd on his side as the chant of "Mighty Mouse! Mighty Mouse!" ? Johnson's nickname ? started almost immediately.

Johnson controlled the fight with takedowns and retaining top control. He nearly got a choke submission on Moraga at the end of the first round, then pinned Moraga's arms and unloaded punches to his stomach in the second. Johnson regularly took Moraga (13-2) to the mat and nearly ended the fight with an armbar submission late in the third round, only to see Moraga slide free.

Moraga's best chance in the fight came late in the fourth round when he caught Johnson with a right hand that stunned the champion. Johnson stumbled back against cage, but quickly regained control, bouncing off the fencing and taking the charging Moraga to the mat. The punch left Johnson's nose bloodied, but the champion never let Moraga mount any offense in the final round and was finally able to get the armbar on Moraga.

MacDonald entered the No. 3 ranked contender in the 170-pound welterweight division, while Ellenberger was ranked No. 4. It wasn't an elimination bout for a shot at champion Georges St. Pierre, especially because MacDonald has said numerous times he has no interest in fighting his training partner and mentor.

The fight might have been boring, but MacDonald was determined not to get caught by Ellenberger's noted punches.

Ellenberger got a few shots in early as blood started trickling from MacDonald's nose late in the first round, but that was the extent of the excitement for the first 10 minutes. The tactical first two rounds drew loud boos from the unhappy crowd, with MacDonald landing most of the punches that were thrown.

Ellenberger recorded a takedown with 1 minute left in the fight, but MacDonald's ground defense was excellent. MacDonald winning 30-27 on two scorecards and 29-28 on the other.

Lawler was impressive in his victory. Within the first 2 minutes, Voelker's nose was bloodied as Lawler (21-9) landed an array of hooks, high knees and kicks to Voelker's face. Voelker (24-10) made it through the first round barely, but didn't last long in the second. Lawler landed a left-footed kick to the side of Voelker's head that sent him to the canvas and two punches later the fight was over at 24 seconds of the second round.

Andrade (9-3) was making her UFC debut coming up from Brazil, while Carmouche was a headliner just a few months ago when she lost to women's champ Ronda Rousey at UFC 157. Carmouche (8-3) gained control and started landing heavy punches early in the second round. Carmouche spent more than 2 minutes battering Andrade's head before the fight was finally stopped at 3:57 of the second round.

Florida schools locked down; government buildings threatened

School shooting

The threat of a school shooting locked down multiple schools in Florida. Image: Flickr / gideon / CC-BY-SA

Broward County, the second-largest county in Florida, has locked down schools because of a threat of a shooting. About 260,000 students are in the Broward County school district, and at least 17 schools are under lockdown. The e-mailed threat also mentioned Broward County government buildings, possibly post offices or libraries.

The Florida school lockdown first began in the Fort Lauderdale suburb of Pembroke Pines. The lockdown was then expanded to include all 17 schools and 260,000 students in the school district. School spokeswoman Nadine Drew said that the schools are ?operating as normal as possible.? In general, lockdowns mean that nobody can move in or out of school buildings, and usually into or out of classrooms. The lockdown will continue until police completely clear the buildings.

Threat to Broward County, Florida

The schools were shut down after a woman called a radio station saying that her husband was ?going to a school to start shooting? An e-mail was also sent to the station, which was forwarded on to authorities in Broward County claimed that ?something big was going to happen? around government buildings. Police said that the identities of the man and his wife are not yet confirmed. The threat, however, is no longer considered serious.

Lockdowns at schools

The practice of ?locking down? schools is relatively new. It is common for both U.S. and Canadian schools to now hold ?lockdown drills.? Most commonly, a lockdown confines teachers and students to their classrooms. The theory is that this will restrict movements and keep everyone within the school more safe. The Broward County school district has about 300 schools and has been holding lockdown drills for the last few years.

'A cast of characters': Prosecution rests its case in Whitey Bulger trial

Margaret Small / AP file

This courtroom sketch depicts James "Whitey" Bulger at the beginning of jury selection for his trial in U.S. District Court in Boston, on June 4. Bulger faces a long list of crimes, including playing a role in 19 killings.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

The prosecution rested in the trial of James ?Whitey? Bulger on Friday after seven weeks of testimony from the former head of the Winter Hill Gang?s ex-compatriots and alleged victims.

The defense for Bulger, 83, could begin to present its case as early as Monday at a federal courthouse in Boston, and is set to call up to 16 witnesses.

Bulger is accused of terrorizing South Boston for decades before spending 16 years on the run, evading FBI agents until he was arrested in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011. He is on trial on federal charges of racketeering and the murder of 19 people.

The prosecution's witness list was peppered with alleged victims of Bulger's extortion and strong-arming and a host of confederates with gangland nicknames such as "The Rifleman" and "The Executioner." The trial so far has been full of witness-stand revelations and sometimes inconsistent testimony, said Chris Dearborn, a professor at Suffolk University, all of which the defense will likely try to pick apart in the coming week.

?This has been quite a cast of characters,? Dearborn said.

The defense is expected to take far less time than the prosecution in presenting their case, said Gerard T. Leone, a former prosecutor and partner at Nixon Peabody.

?I think they?re going to continue to try to develop their three themes that they opened with, which is Number One, that Whitey Bulger is not an informant; Number Two, that he was provided with some type of immunity; and Three, that he did not kill the females,? Leone said.

That will include attempting to chip away at the credibility of three former Bulger associates and star government witnesses: Stephen ?The Rifleman? Flemmi, John ?The Executioner? Martorano and Kevin Weeks.

?You?ve got to hammer the big three witnesses. You have to hammer those because they?re the most damaging in some respects,? Leone said.

On Thursday, Flemmi wound up nearly a week of testimony. Flemmi, who is serving a life sentence for 10 murders, recounted details of several killings that Bulger was allegedly involved in, and on Tuesday accused his former boss of having a relationship with a 16-year-old girl who he took to Mexico.

"You want to talk about pedophilia, right over there at that table," Flemmi said while pointing at Bulger, according to Reuters.

Another witness, Richard Buccheri, told the court on Thursday that Bulger threatened him with a shotgun in the 1980s, one of several tales of alleged extortion in the course of the trial.

?He slammed the table. Then he takes a shotgun that was on the table and sticks it in my mouth,? Buccheri said, according to Reuters. ?He said he wanted 200 ? he meant $200 thousand.?

Buccheri, a real estate developer, testified that Bulger then pulled the shotgun from his mouth and pressed a handgun against his head.

?He said, ?If you don?t pay me in 30 days I?m going to kill you and your family,?? Buccheri testified. ?I agreed to pay.?

Bulger has pleaded not guilty to a federal indictment that includes 19 murders, among other crimes. Prosecutors have said that Bulger was an FBI informant, an accusation that the aging gangster has vehemently denied.

His defense team did its best to attack Flemmi?s credibility on cross examination. Attorney Henry Brennan asked Flemmi whether he expected a reduced sentence for his sometimes gory testimony, which included an account of the strangling death of Deborah Hussey.

?I don?t know what the future holds,? Flemmi responded, according to Reuters. ?Everybody hopes that at some point in the future something beneficial will happen to him. I?m still alive and that?s the hope.?

The big remaining question, Leone said, is whether Bulger himself will take the stand ? something he might be tempted to do to salvage whatever might remain of his tough-guy legacy in the neighborhood he once ruled.

?Martorano, Weeks, and especially Flemmi, they really in some ways, it?s not a legal onus, but they?ve put the messaging onus back on Bulger,? Leone said.

Court refuses to revive military sex assault suit

RICHMOND, Virginia ? A federal appeals court in Virginia has refused to revive a lawsuit against two former defense secretaries by 28 military members and veterans who said they were victims of sexual assault.

The unanimous decision Tuesday by a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirms a lower court's December 2011 ruling dismissing the case. The lawsuit alleged that former defense secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates fostered a culture that allowed rapists to thrive and punished victims for filing complaints against their attackers.

The appeals court acknowledged the severity of the allegations. However, the panel agreed with U.S. District Judge Liam O'Grady that the judiciary should not intervene in matters involving military discipline.

Rumsfeld was President George W. Bush's first defense secretary. Gates served under Bush and President Barack Obama.

Dutch court blocks extradition of terror suspect

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) ? Dutch judges blocked the extradition Tuesday of a terror suspect to the United States, saying he was tortured in Pakistan after his 2010 arrest and it is unclear whether American authorities had any involvement.

The Hague Court of Appeal ruling was a significant victory for the man identified only as Sabir K. in his attempts to avoid being sent for trial in America, but Dutch authorities can still launch a final appeal to the country's Supreme Court.

"He is very satisfied that the role of the Americans is finally being looked at in a critical light," his lawyer Andre Seebregts said. "He has said from the very beginning that the Americans were involved."

Sabir K., who has Dutch and Pakistani nationality, was arrested in Pakistan in 2010 and expelled to the Netherlands in 2011. U.S. authorities accuse him of working with al-Qaida from 2004 to 2010, and of plotting a suicide attack on an American military base in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the Hague appellate court said that U.S. authorities had issued an arrest warrant for K. three days after his detention in Pakistan.

But it went on to say that circumstances of K.'s arrest and detention "raised questions" among the judges, who cited international human rights groups as saying terror suspects are "almost without exception tortured" if detained in Pakistan.

"If the U.S. asked Pakistan to arrest K., knowing he would be tortured by the secret service, this would be a reason to block the extradition," the court said.

Judges had asked the Dutch government to seek clarification from U.S. authorities about their role in the detention, but Dutch justice and security ministry officials refused, saying they did not see the necessity of the request.

The government's refusal meant "uncertainty remained about the involvement of the U.S. in the torture of K.," the court said as it blocked his extradition.

Dutch Security and Justice Ministry spokeswoman Sentina van der Meer said officials were studying the ruling and had no further comment.

Sabir K. was released from Dutch detention earlier this year.

Pope's Brazil trip spurs security, protest worries

Alessandra Tarantino, AP

Pope Francis is hugged by a young girl after stepping out of his popemobile to walk the last part of his way to the altar, to deliver his weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, Wednesday, May, 8, 2013.

By Bradley Brooks and Jenny Barchfield, The Associated Press

Since taking the helm of the world's biggest church in March, Pope Francis has waded into massive crowds with minimal protection to hug children and wash the feet of the faithful. He has surrounded himself with everyday worshipers at every turn, winning acclaim that he's breaking down barriers between the Vatican and the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

Yet for Brazilian security officials charged with protecting the 76-year-old pontiff with the common touch, his seven-day visit this week is an uncommon security challenge.

In his first international trip as pope, Francis has built much of his schedule in the world's biggest Catholic country around high-profile events that send him straight into unpredictable, potentially chaotic environments ? without the protection of the bulletproof popemobile used by his two predecessors.

On Thursday, the pope will visit a tiny chapel founded in 1971 in the Varginha slum, one of Rio's more than 1,000 hillside shantytowns. Many such slums cower under the control of dangerous drug gangs or deadly militias made up mostly of former and current police and firefighters. Police invaded Varginha in January to clear out traffickers, but the gangs remain a shadowy presence there.

The next day, Francis will hit Copacabana beach to walk the Stations of the Cross among an expected 1 million young Catholics gathered for World Youth Day festivities. Vatican officials have said he'll travel to the beach past thousands of devotees in an open-topped vehicle, a plan that would put the thousands of police and soldiers dispatched to protect the pope on high alert and require more plainclothes security.

Brazil's justice and defense ministers, along with a top army commander, urged the pope to use an armored popemobile instead, but the Vatican has responded that Francis likes to jump in and out of his vehicle to greet the faithful, which wouldn't be possible in the more protected vehicle.

"The bulletproofing would lessen our worries, it'd be better if he had it," said Gen. Jose Abreu, the top officer overseeing the military's role in the security scheme. "It's a personal choice and we'll respect it, but it's not remotely pleasant for security forces."

On the top of everyone's minds are the massive and sometimes violent anti-government protests that swept this continent-sized country last month. They've continued, albeit with fewer people, less than a week before Francis' arrival Monday.

Last week, a small protest in Leblon, one of Rio's poshest neighborhoods, erupted into looting and destruction, with demonstrators smashing storefronts, defacing street signs and setting piles of garbage on fire.

A handful of protests are planned. If violence breaks out near the pope, the world may once again see images of demonstrators enveloped by clouds of tear gas, stun grenades ricocheting off stately buildings and rubber bullets whizzing through the air.

Jose Beltrame, the top security official for Rio de Janeiro state overseeing the police who will counter any violent protests, said he's certain his officers "are ready to host the pope" because they know his set agenda and have a plan in place.

However, Beltrame acknowledged that the protests are an unknown factor and that each demonstration would need to be approached differently depending upon how it unfolds.

"The challenges of the protests are different. The police have to be flexible and adapt, because there is no coordinated agenda (of protests)," he said. "We're vigilant, but it depends upon how they happen, when they happen, which is information that we don't fully have."

Joe Biundini, a Brazilian-born former U.S. Marine who heads the FAM International Group security firm, warned that much will depend on police response to any protests.

"If you see the police doing something stupid, like violently attacking protesters, that could cause some very serious problems," Biundini said.

Security officials have said the stiffest security challenge will be providing security for the pope's two mass events on 2.5 mile-long (4 kilometer-long) Copacabana beach. Still, they insist they're experienced in handling mega-crowds and point to a string of concerts that have attracted similarly massive numbers of spectators to Copacabana.

April's bombing attacks on the Boston Marathon, which killed three and injured 264, have certainly raised sensitivities about the potential dangers of such mass events. But Brazilian police said there'll be no checkpoints or bag inspections of the crowds at Copacabana, similar to the security schemes at other events.

Felipe Dana, AP

Policemen from the Pacifying Police Unit, or 'UPP', patrol in the Varginha area of the Manguinhos slum complex where Pope Francis will visit next week during his trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

That doesn't mean the Brazilians won't be making a show of force.

Some 10,000 police officers and more than 14,000 soldiers will be on duty during the pope's visit, and six Brazilian military aircraft will provide transportation for the pontiff. The helicopters will let Francis avoid Rio's snarled traffic and the dangers of land travel.

Nearly 100 lookout towers will also allow police to monitor an expected 1.5 million people turning out for yet another mass event, the World Youth Day's closing Mass in the rural neighborhood of Guaratiba, about 30 miles west of Copacabana on the far outskirts of Rio.

Federal, state and local governments are expected to spend a total of around $52 million on all the security and logistical measures for the papal visit.

Even with such numbers, Francis' itinerary will at some points push him out of the reach of all but his immediate security detail, entrusting much of his protection to the crowd of faithful. Experts have warned that a lone wolf-style assailant presents the gravest security threat.

"Much of the pope's security will be provided by the Brazilian people" themselves, said General Presidential Secretary Gilberto Carvalho.

Biundini said the high-profile visit will provide a tempting stage for demonstrators looking for a world audience.

"On the one hand, the pope is a very respected figure in Brazil, which is of course a majority Catholic country," he said. "On the other hand, all eyes are going to be on Brazil, so the pope's visit would be a very attractive platform for groups to get their messages across."

For Brazil's government, the pope's visit is seen as a test run for the country's hosting of next year's World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Olympics, which will also draw millions of visitors.

In preparation, Brazilian soldiers have invaded a swath of Rio's slums to push out drug gangs and re-establish their authority. In large part because of slum violence, Brazil suffers one of the world's highest homicide rates, which has doubled in the past three decades, according to a new report.

Nonetheless, a recent visit to the slum Francis is set to enter revealed only two police officers parked just a few meters from the chapel where he'll pray. Journalists were warned by adolescent boys to not take pictures of certain areas where drug peddlers were active, standard practice in slums that have yet to be pacified.

Varginha is one of Rio's smallest slums, a triangle-shaped chunk of flat, dusty land sitting between two putrid waterways full of raw sewage. On the third side runs a busy main road with an elevated commuter train that noisily rolls by overhead.

Brazilian police haven't revealed how they'll secure the slum when Francis arrives, beyond that military police will handle the job. The slum's surroundings somewhat ease security concerns, with the waterways acting as natural boundaries and only two roads 300 meters apart from one another allowing access.

With so many challenges ahead of them, city officials have made clear they still welcome the visit by Francis, the first pope to come from the Americas. But they'll also be relieved when they're no longer responsible for his safety in such complicated terrain.

"It's all worrisome," said Mayor Eduardo Paes. "When you think that in Copacabana we're going to have two New Year's concerts in the same week and then when you think you can go home and rest but then you have another New Year's party in Guaratiba, you can imagine this is something that has demanded a huge effort on our part."?
