Is Boston Like Columbine?

Maybe. Either, neither, or it could easily be a combination. It?s way too early to know. The first thing I learned covering Columbine all those years was that most of the theories that gain traction this week will be wrong.

But we do have an interesting situation developing with a pair of brothers as suspects: potentially, the classic dyad scenario. Notorious dyad examples include Bonnie and Clyde, Leopold and Loeb, and the D.C. snipers. The dyad tends to be a twisted, particular relationship that plays out very differently than the lone gunman or the terrorist team.

Since that idea is getting a lot of attention, let?s explore the ?dyad? phenomenon and how dyads typically play out. Whether that pattern was relevant here will be determined later. All we know is that they were both there at the scene?and then became fugitives together. What came before is all still conjecture.

The good news: There is a typical dyad pattern. That?s in contrast to lone killers, who run the psychological gamut. Every study has drawn the conclusion that there is no typical mass murderer. Mass killers are mostly not loners or outcasts, and the Columbine killers were neither. ?

Killer dyads are more consistent. And the popular conception of the dominant, charismatic leader roping a submissive follower into his diabolical scheme?surprisingly, that usually turns out to be true. The leader is commonly a sadistic, dehumanizing psychopath?not always, but far more often than is the case with lone gunmen/bombers, where that personality type is relatively rare. The follower is often depressive, submissive, or otherwise dependent.

When there is a significant age difference?as with one killer just out of high school?we can?t be certain the older partner plays the lead role, but it usually works that way.

Dyads usually contain contrasting personalities. A psychopathic killer generally does not link up with another psychopath. Nor do depressives pair up. Thrill-seeking psychopaths have been known to pair up, but most are looking for the qualities they lack.

Here, Columbine is highly illuminating. It?s a lousy example for understanding most school shootings, because it?s so atypical: It wasn?t even intended primarily as a shooting?the main event was the failed bombs. But Columbine is a perfect illustration of the classic dyad: Eric Harris wanted a minion to march behind him; Dylan Klebold was looking for someone to lead a parade.

I have often wondered why Eric even recruited a partner. Their writings indicate that Eric sought out the arms, collected the ammo, researched the big bombs, built all the pipe bombs, drew up the plans and diagrams, conducted the reconnaissance, calculated how to maximize the body count, cooked up batch after batch of failed napalm, and generally devised the plan. What exactly did he need Dylan for?

To carry one of the duffel bags and shoot additional people? Couldn?t Eric have coaxed his buddy into dropping a duffel bag in the cafeteria without mentioning the propane bomb inside? Didn?t he have enough firepower with his two guns to kill hundreds? He could have killed far more than 13 people if he focused on work instead of laughing it up and gabbing with his partner the whole way through.

Which is the nub. The shooting was superfluous anyway?it was to be dwarfed by the bombs. The shooting was supposed to be the fun part. ?Have fun,? they wrote on the schedule for their last act.

Almost 14 years to the day after Columbine, I would say Dylan?s main purpose in the whole tragedy was for Eric to have fun. What?s the fun of a shooting spree on your own? And more importantly, how does it entertain you the entire year leading up to the attack?

Serial killers don't space out their murders for efficiency. They do it to maximize enjoyment. Death and torture are the amusing parts. They want to relish the screams over and over. They want recognition. They sometimes assist the police investigation, not to get caught, but to toy with the cops, and to sneer at them.

Sadistic killers who go the event route, as with Columbine, need to plan for months, and they are hungry for satisfaction during that planning period. When you only get one bomb blast, the thrill of the plot is everything. ?Dylan offered Eric a highly intelligent audience of one. They were laughing for month after month at the fools missing the plot unfolding right under their noses.

The boys videotaped themselves at an afternoon of target practice with several friends six weeks before the attack. They shot up a bowling pin and then a tree trunk, ?Imagine that in someone's fucking brain," Eric said. They all laughed, but?only he and Dylan?got the real joke.

Months it went on. An entire year of satisfaction. None of that would have been possible without one hapless follower in on the joke.

That?s how dyads typically operate. Whether that model ends up fitting the Boston massacre is something we may discover soon.

Throughout the mountain towns of the Caucasus, gymnasiums were full of wiry teens and young men learning to box, wrestle, and practice Asian martial arts. Speed bags hung from trees the way basketball hoops decorate American driveways.

Caucasians were heavily overrepresented in the combat sports on Russian, and before that Soviet, national teams.??It?s not surprising that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a boxer and the younger Dzhokhar a wrestler.

For at least two centuries, Chechens and their neighbors have been fighting to throw off the yoke of Russian domination. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, that fight heated up again.

Chechnya was pummeled brutally in the process. The main city of Grozny was largely reduced to rubble. People hand carried their water in buckets even to high-rise apartments. Few windows were left unshattered. Gas flares from ruptured pipes created huge torches on block after block. Garbage piled up on empty or pulverized lots and cows grazed through it. In the buildings where families still lived, they spray painted ?zhivoot? ? living ? on the outside walls, hoping to dissuade Russian soldiers from blowing it up.

But through all that the Chechens radiated toughness. The young men kept to the mountains, coming down to buy rifles from demoralized and poorly paid Russian soldiers ? and then to attack them with their own guns.

But by the time the Russians agreed to withdraw their troops from Chechnya in 1996, a change was visible in Chechen attitudes. The region had been Muslim for centuries, but Islam was moving more to the center of the Chechen fight. A few Arabs ? some of them veterans of the war against Soviets in Afghanistan ? came to set up madrasas to teach a fundamentalist, Wahhabi version of Islam. It made some rapid inroads, dividing mountain villages with sometimes murderous results.

When the Russians withdrew their tanks from Chechnya, long lines of them rumbling out of the mountains, men who appeared to be Arabs, with long beards, black flags with Arabic characters, and Korans held open for all to see, rode on the gun turrets.

The nationalistic flavor of the Chechen war seemed to be taking on the character of an Islamic jihad.

In the years since, Chechens have once again been suppressed by the heavy hand of Russia and in retaliation, Chechens have claimed credit for a series of horrific acts of terror against Russians ? including the massacre of schoolchildren at Beslan, the taking of an entire Moscow theater audience hostage, and a series of apartment building and subway station bombings with scores of fatalities.

From the days of Catherine the Great to the early 1990s, Russian soldiers showed a grudging respect for the great warriors of the Caucasus who fought, soldier to soldier, for their independence.

One can only imagine what the legendary Shamil ? a Caucasian hero of the 19th century ? would think of the last decade of attacks on children and other noncombatants.

Crowdfunding Everything From Solar Panels to Veronica Mars

For those wary of traditional banks after the 2008 financial crisis, there?s another option: lending and borrowing online through crowdfunding platforms. These companies act as financial intermediaries, gathering small amounts of money from large numbers of lenders, investors, or donors to fund a given cause or project.

Investments made through crowdfunding platforms often aren?t backed by federal insurance, so investors face a greater risk of losing their money. But there?s also a social dimension to crowdfunding: the desire to help a good cause or a worthy individual can motivate investors just as much as the desire to make money.

Here?s a list of three innovative companies that seek to fill a financial need and generate social and financial returns in the process. In the coming months, the Securities and Exchange Commission will wrap up rule-making on 2012?s Jumpstart Our Small Business Startups Act and legalize a new form of online finance, based on giving funders small amounts of equity in a project.

1.???? Mosaic

Solar energy is most cost effective when it?s generated at the point of use, like on a rooftop. But many banks won?t finance small solar projects, and most small businesses and organizations can?t afford to lease the technology without help. Solar cooperatives, which allow a group of stakeholders to share both the cost of the technology and the revenue the panels produce, provide one way to get around the problem.

Another is Mosaic, a website that allows accredited and non-accredited investors in California and New York to invest in solar projects that cost between $55,000 and $2 million. Investors contribute fractions?called "notes"?of the total loan needed for a given project. As solar projects sell the power they generate, they repay investors with interest. ????

Returns are around 4.5 percent, higher than U.S. Treasury bonds, according to Mosaic. Investors can contribute as little as $25. The company has fully funded 12 solar projects and raised more than $1.1 million since it launched in 2011. Although?Mosaic vets solar projects carefully, but using the platform does carry some risk.

Investment has grown since the platform shifted to an interest-bearing model, said spokeswoman Lisa Curtis. Before, the average contribution was $100. Now that people can make money while funding a cause they care about, the average contribution jumped to around $1,000. ??

2.???? Pave

Pretty much anyone with a dream can apply to borrow money through Pave, a platform that began with the hope of offering a better alternative to traditional student loans. Pave matches so-called prospects, U.S. citizens who are 18 and over, with a team of backers willing to help fund schooling, business ideas, or creative projects. To settle the debt, prospects commit to giving backers up to 10 percent of their income for the next decade.

Pave payments adjust depending on how much a prospect earns at a given time. Because repayment is based on income, Pave argues that the investments aren?t high risk: Chances are, the prospect will figure out a way to make money, even if the project they raised money to fund doesn?t work out.

Pave launched last December with eight prospects, ranging from an engineering student to a filmmaker. Prospects have sought to raise an average of $20,000, and backers must invest at least $500 in a given prospect. Backers are also encouraged to mentor the young person they have invested in. A similar company, Upstart, focuses on college graduates. ?

3.???? Lending Club ??

Lending Club allows borrowers to crowdfund personal loans and gives investors an opportunity to build a portfolio of "notes," small portions of those loans. More than $1.5 billion has been invested since the platform launched in 2007, earning investors over $133 million in interest. Members can open joint accounts, corporate accounts, trust accounts, and even retirement accounts.

Lending Club?s investors have earned an average rate of return of over 9.5 percent, according to the company, and borrowers pay lower interest rates than they would on many credit cards. Almost 80 percent of borrowers use low-interest, fixed-rate loans from Lending Club to pay off other debts.

Although Lending Club does charge fees, they are lower than those found at most traditional banks. Borrowers can seek loans up to $35,000, which they must pay off in monthly installments over three to five years. Interest rates are calculated according to an individual?s creditworthiness?and Lending Club members are very creditworthy. The company rejects ninety percent of individuals who request a loan, focusing only on those with high credit scores.

Lending Club members? cash balances are held at Wells Fargo bank and are federally insured. However, as with Mosaic, Lending Club?s notes aren?t insured, raising the risk that investors won?t get their money back. And as with Mosaic, state regulations restrict who is eligible to participate. Eight states don?t allow borrowers to use the service, and in most states investors have to have an annual gross income of over $70,000.

Engineer working to put more science behind bloodstain pattern analysis

Apr. 18, 2013 ? Daniel Attinger paused before handing over a photo of a crime scene.

"Are you bothered by the sight of blood?"

There was good reason for his question: The photo showed blood pooled and smeared on a floor. Blood drops ran down a nearby wall. A single shoe was left in the evidence of violence and pain.

"You can see some of the blood has started to dry," said Attinger, an Iowa State University associate professor of mechanical engineering. "There are elliptical stains, all pointing toward the pool. On the wall, the stains indicate the region of origin of the blood spatter."

The size and distribution of the bloodstains offers clues to whether a violent crime was caused by a gunshot, a stabbing or a beating, he said. The drying patterns also provide clues to the timing of the attack.

"A solid forensics expertise can help find the bad guy, or can help keep the good out of jail," Attinger said.

Analysis of bloodstains, for example, has played a role in the murder investigation and charges against Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee sprinter who raced in the Olympics for South Africa.

But current techniques in bloodstain pattern analysis need more science behind them. As evidence, Attinger cites a 2009 report published by the National Research Council, "Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward."

"Scientific studies support some aspects of bloodstain pattern analysis," the report says. "One can tell, for example, if the blood spattered quickly or slowly, but some experts extrapolate far beyond what can be supported ?. The uncertainties associated with bloodstain pattern analysis are enormous."

Attinger and a research team he's leading are using a three-year, $632,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to take some of the uncertainty out of the analysis.

Uniquely qualified Attinger's engineering career includes studies of the shape and deformation of ink-jetted drops, the evaporation of droplets on solid surfaces and even identification of wine stains with sophisticated pattern-recognition algorithms. His field is multiphase microfluidics, which includes precise studies of fluid dynamics, heat transfer and mass transfer.

"During these projects supported by the National Science Foundation, I developed a unique set of skills related to fluid dynamics, the generation of drops, their flight, impact and drying on a surface," Attinger said. "I look at these phenomena and try to explain how they happened."

And so Attinger was ready when he learned of the Justice Department's call for scientific studies of bloodstain pattern analysis and other forensic sciences.

Within one month, he assembled a research team that includes Shih-Fu Chang, the Richard Dicker Professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Columbia University in New York, a senior vice dean for Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Science and director of the university's Digital Video and Multimedia Lab; Adam Donaldson, an assistant professor of chemical engineering who specializes in computational fluid dynamics at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada; and Craig Moore, detective constable with the Niagara Regional Police Service in Ontario, Canada, who's a bloodstain pattern analyst. Other collaborators include Howard Stone, the Dixon Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University in New Jersey and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Attinger's team is also working with the Midwest Forensics Resource Center, a collaboration of state crime labs, the U.S. Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory and Iowa State's Institute for Physical Research and Technology. Several Iowa Staters in the department of mechanical engineering are also part of the team: Jin Xu, a post-doctoral research associate; Miles Hayes, a senior student; and Ying Xing, another senior.

The team is working to understand the physics behind the impact and drying of blood drops. It is also working to develop portable tools that crime-scene investigators can use to analyze and interpret bloodstains.

"Our research goal is to make forensic science a bit more based on the principles of fluid dynamics," Attinger said.

Inside the lab A tiny drop of horse blood appeared at the end of a slim tube. And with a push of a button, the drop was atomized into a spray that sent droplets flying across the lab and onto a long sheet of white paper. A high-speed camera takes up to 100,000 images per second to monitor the process.

Xing and Xu track the bloodstains across the paper to analyze and ultimately understand the trajectory of blood droplets through the air.

"The challenge is to reconstruct the curved trajectory of the blood," Attinger said. "It is a problem that was described 75 years ago. It's very complicated. Nobody has found the way yet."

His team is also building a larger instrument that will slam a piston into a pool of blood, sending blood splashing and spattering. Data from the instrument will help the team understand bloodstains from beatings.

The research team is also working to develop a 3-D measurement device to quickly and easily measure the thickness of bloodstains at a crime scene. Attinger said that would help investigators more accurately locate the blood's point of origin by estimating the impact velocity.

It's not all high technology in the lab. Attinger said some of the studies involve blood sprayed by the hammer of a mouse trap. Researchers are also making painstaking counts of the tiny spikes that radiate from drops of blood thrown to a floor or wall.

Attinger said this forensics project is interesting for him and for his lab.

"I always want to show people how important engineering is to help people with their lives and with society," he said. "I always try to find projects that are useful to society. I think engineers can do a lot to make the world a better place."

Exact Sciences stock drops as cancer test disappoints

(Reuters) - Exact Sciences Corp said its molecular screening test for colorectal cancer met its goals in a large late-stage study, detecting the disease in more than 90 percent of patients, but its shares plummeted as much as 30 percent on Thursday as the results were not as robust as some were expecting.

Exact's test, which identifies abnormal DNA in cells shed in a patient's stool, detected 92 percent of colorectal cancers and 42 percent of pre-cancerous polyps in a large late-stage study.

"Pre-cancerous sensitivity, which was the key metric investors were looking at, was well below expectations," Wedbush Securities analyst Zarak Khurshid said, adding that "lower pre-cancer sensitivity may limit the eventual addressable opportunity for the test."

Khurshid was expecting a 55 percent detection rate for pre-cancerous polyps.

Exact Sciences Chief Executive Kevin Conroy, speaking to investors on a conference call, acknowledged that the test's detection rates in the study were not as high as expected, even though they met the trial's main goals. The company had expected the test to detect 50 percent of pre-cancerous polyps.

But he said the data confirm the value of the test in detecting cancer and pre-cancerous conditions.

"We don't believe this will be an impediment in any way to the ultimate adoption of this test by physicians and patients," Conroy said. "I understand that people may be disappointed, but clinically, it just won't make that much difference."

Exact's non-invasive test, called Cologuard, was developed to be a more accurate alternative to currently available non-invasive screenings and an option for people who are not getting a recommended colonoscopy.

The study compared the performance of the test to colonoscopy and fecal immunochemical testing that looks for blood in a stool sample. The test met the study's primary goals for cancer detection rates. It also met its secondary goals of detecting larger polyps and demonstrating non-inferiority to the FIT screening.

While a colonoscopy is considered the most accurate method of detecting colon cancer and polyps, many people avoid the test, which involves inserting a flexible tube into the colon. Nearly half of those over age 50 have not been screened as recommended.

The trial was conducted on 10,000 patients between the ages of 50 and 84, who were at average risk for colorectal cancer.

Madison, Wisconsin-based Exact Sciences plans to submit the study data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as part of its approval application.

Mizuho analyst Peter Lawson said the data met the thresholds needed for FDA approval. Cologuard's pre-cancer detection rate also was higher than those for other non-invastive tests on the market, Lawson said.

Colorectal cancer is the third most-commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, responsible for about 50,000 deaths a year.

The company's shares were down 21 percent to $7.87 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.
