Rabbit Food: The Perfect Spring Salad | Fetch Magazine by Taigan

Take advantage of local farmers? markets and young spring greens in time to make a gorgeous Easter or Passover salad.

The salad recipe below is from one of our favorite recent cookbooks, Edible, A Celebration of Local Foods, but it?s only a template. This time of year you could toss in everything from real spring onions to blanched peas, baby asparagus tips, or haricots verts. In Edible, for example, there?s another arugula salad that pairs the peppery green with goat cheese, pecans, and the strawberries that are also in season.

Be creative, but keep it real?that?s the Edible mantra, and ours too. In a salad, after all, the quality of the ingredients matters more than in almost any other dish (which is why we recommend the Extra Virgin Olive Oil made for Blackberry Farm from Napa Valley Arbequina olives, or St . James Cheese Co.?s Georges Extra Virgin Olive Oil ?made in Kalamata, Greece).

Pictured above, greens look even more gorgeous when set off by the milky white finish of Astier de Villatte?s ceramic bowls and serving platters. Handmade in Paris, the pieces are surprisingly light, yet extremely durable, and the perfect warm weather tableware.

Arugula and Fennel Salad

(From Edible, A Celebration of Local Foods, by Tracey Ryder and Carol Topalian)

Serves 6

4 cups (about 5 ounces) lightly packed arugula

2 small fennel bulbs (about 1? pounds)

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice (preferably Meyer), plus more, if needed

? teaspoon kosher salt, plus more, if needed

? pound Pecorino Romano or Parmigiano-Reggiano

? teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

In a large salad bowl, arrange the arugula. Cut the stalks off the fennel bulbs. Remove the fronds from the stalks and set aside. Cut each bulb in half lengthwise through the root. On a cutting board, place each half cut-side down, then cut in half lengthwise again. Cut each quarter into very thin slices crosswise and scatter the slices on top of the arugula. Cut the fennel stalks into thin slices and on the diagonal and scatter on top of the salad.

Sprinkle the oil, lemon juice, and salt over the vegetables and toss gently. The salad should taste light and slightly lemony. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Using a potato peeler or cheese slicer, cut ribbons of cheese and scatter them on top of the salad. Sprinkle with the pepper and top with the reserved fennel fronds. Serve immediately.

(AP) ? Viewers got a first glimpse of Whitney Houston's upcoming film Monday when NBC's "Today" show premiered a trailer for the much-awaited release, and a fuller clip debuted on Yahoo! Movies.

A remake of the 1976 original, "Sparkle" stars Houston as the mother of three girls who form a singing group and struggle with fame and drug addiction. The trailer displayed the daughters, including "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, in performance. Houston is prominent throughout, at one point singing the classic gospel song "His Eye Is on the Sparrow."

She also tells one of her daughters: "I always knew you had the gift. It makes me feel like I did something right. Don't lose it."

Debra Martin Chase, who is a producer of the film, said she had mixed emotions with the trailer's release; the movie is scheduled for release Aug. 17.

"On the one hand, I'm so excited about the movie and we're really happy with how it turned out," she said in a phone interview Monday. "(But) just to have it said yet again that this is Whitney's last performance, it's hard. It's hard."

Houston is listed as the executive producer of the movie, which had already finished filming in Detroit when the superstar died Feb. 11 at 48 in Beverly Hills, Calif., on the eve of the Grammy Awards. An autopsy has shown she accidentally drowned in the bathtub, with heart disease and cocaine use listed as contributing factors.

There is no mention made of drugs in the trailer, and Chase declined to say whether it would be a focal part of the movie as it was in the original, saying she didn't want to talk specifically about the plotlines until closer to the movie's release date.

She also added that the movie was not altered to increase Houston's time in the film in the wake of her death.

"She is an integral, very much an integral part of the movie, but she's not one of the girls," she said. "She plays an important role, she's throughout the movie, but she's not one of the main characters."

Chase echoed other people involved with the movie who praised Houston's professionalism on the set. The movie was seen as a comeback vehicle for the star, whose career had waned over the years due to battles with drugs and alcohol.

"She was healthy, happy, on time every day, hung out on set when she wasn't working because she loved the cast," said Chase, who also declined to talk about the circumstances of Houston's death. "She had fun, her spirit buoyed everybody every day."

Houston had worked to get "Sparkle" to the screen for 12 years. It was her first movie since 1996's "The Preacher's Wife" and 20 years removed from her debut in the blockbuster movie "The Bodyguard," which was rereleased for one night last week.

"Whitney loved this movie very much. This was her idea," Chase said. "The great thing for me as her friend and her producing partner is that this movie will be an essential part of her legacy. ... It's the best performance of her life; she knew it at the time. She looked beautiful on camera and she enjoyed every minute making the movie."

Clashes in rival towns kill 22 in western Libya

(AP) ? Militias from rival towns in western Libya battled each other with tanks and artillery on Tuesday in fierce fighting that killed at least 22 people, local officials said.

The clashes erupted over the weekend between the Arab-majority town of Ragdalein and the Berber-dominated town of Zwara, some 110 kilometers (70 miles) west of the capital Tripoli. The violence is fueled by deep-rooted animosity between the neighbors, who took different sides in Libya's civil war that toppled Moammar Gadhafi last year.

The fighting is the latest in a series of local rivalries that threaten to divide Libya along tribal and regional lines. Libya's new leaders, who took power after Gadhafi's capture and killing in October, have struggled to stamp their authority on the country and rein in the myriad armed groups that helped defeat the dictator's forces but have refused to disarm.

In Tuesday's clashes, local Ragdalein official Rami Kaanan said 17 fighters and town residents were killed, including two women and one infant. The infant was killed when a rocket fell on his home, collapsing the ceiling, Kaanan said.

Zwara spokesman Adel Kashbour said five people from his side were killed and 49 wounded.

"The fighting continues. Two rockets landed in the city, killing two young men," Kashbour said of the most recent deaths.

The clashes first began Sunday after fighters from Ragdalein said they took 34 men from the Zwara brigade hostage to avenge what Ragdalein forces said were months of abuses, including the looting of property.

The hostages were released Monday after mediation, but the cease-fire quickly collapsed.

Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib said he, along with his defense minister and chief of staff, met with elders from Zwara on Tuesday, and will later meet with tribal leaders from Ragdalein to discuss a cease-fire and reconciliation.

"We will send forces from the defense and interior ministries to resolve the issue, stop both sides, and be in the middle to quell the violence," el-Keib said. "I am very optimistic."

Libya's Interior Ministry dispatched police forces to the towns on Monday to quell the violence, but they were overpowered by the heavily-armed local militias.

"We have no ability to stop them except through negotiations. We think the Defense Ministry is better equipped for this job because we are equipped with light weapons," Interior Minister Fawzi Abdul-Al said in Tripoli.

Last week, Libya's leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil acknowledged to The Associated Press that his government has failed to act quickly enough to restore stability.

His spokesman, Mohammed al-Hareizi, said Tuesday that security officials in top posts must do more.

"The government must improve its performance and speed up their efforts, or we will have to take extreme measures, especially with the defense and interior ministries, which have failed to deliver any of their plans," al-Hareizi said, warning that ministers could be replaced soon.

The conflict between the towns is one of many local rivalries stemming from Gadhafi's 40 years of divide-and-rule policies and Libya's eight-month civil war. Fighting in the remote desert oasis of Sabha between Arab tribes and an anti-Gadhafi African tribe killed around 150 people and left hundreds displaced last week.

Zwara, a town of 45,000 people, is less than 10 kilometers (six miles) from Ragdalein, which is twice as large.

Zwara residents were quick to join the uprising last year that led to Gadhafi's capture and killing in October. The Berber tribe there complained of discrimination under Gadhafi, including neglect and a ban from high-level posts.

Ragdalein, which is inhabited primarily by Arab tribes, was a stronghold for Gadhafi loyalists and heavily armed by his regime during the civil war.

Zwara residents, themselves well armed by rebels during the uprising, accuse Ragdalein's fighters of raping women, looting property and attacking the town last year for opposing Gadhafi's regime. They say they are now being blocked by Ragdalein's tribes from reaching their farms south of the city.

Hybrid Electric Auto : A Completely Different Technology For Any
Guaranteeing Upcoming For That Environment

Any hybrid-electric automobile , or perhaps HEV, brings together a power storage method by having
an entertained means of making electrical power , normally from the use of some form of energy.
Every sort regarding HEV features its own functioning quality and decided on layout procedures , in
addition to advantages and drawbacks.

The progression of internal key serp autos , specifically in cars , is among the supreme triumphs of
modern technological innovation as being a new rising energy saving and atmosphere -friendly
automobile , thats exactly why the particular hybrid-electric autos ended up developed to supply ease
to each and every human.

In the entire process of producing the particular crossbreed electrical automobile , the most important
could be the energy saving along with the ecological security. When these days this specific include
the typical problems encountered by the modern society.

Having the particular hybrid-electric automobile started out the electrical automobile. nEvertheless ,
the principle problem with the electrical automobile is always that it's mainly relying on the particular
electric batteries. For that reason , provides minimal selection.

First coming from all , the particular crossbreed electrical automobile was allowed to be an electric
automobile using electric batteries regarding electrical power storage and it is equipped with an on-
board heat engine-powered generator. This means that this kind of crossbreed comes with a
extended selection.

The heat serp electrical power along with the juice are especially intended being an essential scheme
that will continually modulates the between the heat serp along with the juice devices. This will likely
additionally depend on the particular generating timetable.

Since the beginning of the application of cars , electrical automobiles are already already recognized
and conceptualized. However the energy train is way better in various factors , being an power
source , battery was unequal to the superior-energy content material , easiness due to the managing ,
and economical and copious amounts of items regarding generator energy.

Now, it's got almost been a hundred years since the electrical automobile may be generally talked
about , yet the latest innovations within the HEV technological innovation along with the increasing
worries for the atmosphere provides enhanced the particular push on an HEV and this has become a
realization nowadays.

We could consider the personalized means of transportation as being a very important connection
within the financial sequence regarding todays contemporary communities knowning that an
individual automobile appears to be the most popular selection.

Electric autos tend to be energy efficient than the contemporary autos when the electrical autos
functions at around forty six % regarding effectiveness , whilst any contemporary automobile
functions at about 18 % only.

There are reports that will typically ends that will electrical automobiles using electric batteries are
around ten to 30 percent extremely effective using power over a petrol automobiles , with regards to
the exact assumptions in the autos power utilization and power sequence effectiveness.

Certainly, the particular evaluations in the electrical autos along with the standard autos are

Globish ? a language of international business | Global Lingo

Globish

An article by Michael Skapinker in the Financial Times discusses how executives speak in a language of their own.

Jean-Paul Nerri?re, a Frenchman, observed years of English conversations as a long-time IBM executive.

A business language

He noticed that when two non-native English speakers spoke to one another, for example an Italian and a Belgian, they would both know their English proficiency wasn?t perfect, but they would communicate and manage.

However, when having to speak to an American or a British person, the Italian or Belgian wouldn?t fare so well. In these cases the native English speaker would speak too quickly and use unknown expressions which hindered the communication.

Nerri?re noted that although he had a heavy accent to his English, international clients actually understood him clearer than his Texan boss!

Decaffeinated English

These observations led Nerri?re to develop Globish, pronounced Globe-ish.

The language compromises 1,500 English words which he believes form a common ground that non-native English speakers can adopt in the context of international business. For this purpose, he believes that the vocabulary is perfectly sufficient enough to communicate.

Never tell jokes

The central ideology of Globish is as a tool of international communication which is not artificial but a language void of all figurative speech that English possess.

Globish speakers avoid all figurative language and never tell jokes, meaning there is no need to engage with Anglophone literature, culture or humour and it is easy to learn. Though Nerri?re actually likes to think of it as more of a tool than a language as it is not a ?vehicle of a culture? but a tool of communication.

Limit the influence of English

Nerri?re conceives of it as an international auxiliary language, like Esperanto and that Globish promises to limit the influence of English. He hopes that the language will facilitate the life of everyone and put everyone on a par. Some have even described it as the worldwide dialect of the third millennium.

With 1.5 billion speaking it as a second language; maybe Globish will one day be the language of globalisation that Nerri?re hopes it will?

As native English speakers will not understand a fluent Globish speaker; this represents an opportunity for even native English speakers to learn a new language and become bilingual.

We?ve borrowed some Globish from Robert McCrum?s article in the Guardian below:

Say it in English

I went to my niece and nephew?s party the other weekend. I played the piano and we were all singing along when a mouse ran out from behind the sofa with a piece of peach in its mouth.

Say it in Globish

At the party of my children?s brother the other day, I played an instrument with black and white keys and we all sang along. Then an animal chased by cats ran out from behind the seat with a piece of fruit in its mouth.

The concept of having a language for international business is creative as the tool allows people to communicate neutrally. Globish is resourceful as being only 1,500 words it is relatively accessible and easy to learn.

Where I do support the need to protect languages and hinder English?s ever increasing global dominance, I feel the time spent learning Globish would be more beneficial and have a positive impact if spent learning a real language, one that comes embedded within a culture, rather than learning a language which can be classed to some extent as another variant of Pidgin English.
