Women of all ages may have general complaints of occasional joint pain or swelling especially after doing heavy tasks or long periods of exercise. Women also tend to put off seeking medical attention for general pains and aches, swelling or soreness because we don?t seem to have the time to take care of ourselves.
One swollen joint after exercise or injury is not unusual and can be treated easily with ice, elevation, rest, and seeking the advice of your doctor if the pain doesn?t go away after a couple of days. However, if you have general joint pain and swelling, swelling of a joint not related to injury or exercise, or soft tissue swelling for no reason it would be wise to seek the advice and treatment of your doctor.
Joint swelling accompanied by pain, appetite changes, fatigue, and mood swings can be related to your immune system and may need further medical treatment. Muscle weakness or change in balance may also need to be reported to your health care provider.
Disease processes that may be the culprit include lupus, auto immune conditions, multiple sclerosis, thyroid conditions, pregnancy, diabetes, or kidney issues. Many of these symptoms seem benign but combined together with what is going on in your daily life these same symptoms may add stress and increase your chances for becoming depressed.
?Hormonal changes due to menopause, pregnancy, or ovarian disease can also cause some of these same symptoms as can a serious bout with the flu. Always, Always check with your doctor if you have symptoms lasting more than a week. Your health matters.
