Police: Egyptian TV station owner Okasha arrested

CAIRO (AP) ? Police say the owner of a TV station on trial for incitement after calling for the murder of Egypt's Islamist president has been detained in connection with a series of allegations, including theft of electrical power and issuing a bounced check.

They said Tawfiq Okasha was not at his Cairo home when police went to arrest him Sunday. He was detained when he later surrendered at a police station.

Authorities last month ordered the closure of Okasha's TV station, which he used to attack President Mohammed Morsi.

It was not immediately clear why authorities decided to move against Okasha now since most Egyptians, particularly celebrities, get away with a fine when faced with similar charges.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Unfortunately, the camera we were recording on stopped after 30 minutes, but I'm still proud to present the talk I have.

I really did enjoy every aspect of presenting this talk. Adam Shutsa, the Lead Designer at 500px, was instrumental in helping me with the script and in making the slides (not to mention making the app). I'm hoping to present more talks, and more often.

Fish eaters run lower risk of heart attack, despite some mercury content, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. This is the conclusion drawn by a group of researchers at Ume? University in Sweden after having weighed the risks of mercury content against the advantages of healthful fatty acids.

The work was done as part of an international collaborative effort.

Fish is healthful food, and several studies have shown that people who eat fish have a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases than those who eat very little or no fish. At the same time, some fish contain environmental pollutants that can be hazardous to our health. One such pollutant that is suspected of increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease is methyl mercury, which is found in varying degree in different kinds of fish. If people eat fish with much pollutants, this would lead to increased risk of disease, but at the same time if people are overly cautious and eat too little fish, the risk of disease also increases.

In order to attain a better understanding of what the golden mean might be, researchers at Ume? University, in collaboration with researchers from Finland and elsewhere, examined how the risk of heart attack (acute myocardial infarction) is contingent on the amount of omega-3 fats and mercury from fish that people have in their body. The content was measured in blood and hair samples from people that had previously participated in health studies in northern Sweden and eastern Finland. The Swedish blood samples were from the Medical Biobank in Ume?. Those who experienced a heart attack after the health check-up were compared with those who did not.

The findings are now being published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN). It turned out that mercury was linked to increased risk, and omega-3 fatty acids to decreased risk, of having a heart attack. The increased risk from mercury was noticeable only at high levels of this environmental pollutant in the body and if the level of the protective omega-3 fatty acids was concomitantly low. In other words, what is important is the balance between healthful and hazardous substances in fish. The environmental pollutant in this study was mercury. For organic pollutants like PCB and dioxin, the problem complex is similar, but no study of this kind has yet been undertaken.

The conclusion is simple: Eat fish, but avoid fish with the most pollutants. The Swedish National Food Agency recommends that people should eat fish 2-3 times a week, but their intake of predatory fish (e.g. pike, perch, pike-perch), which contain a great deal of mercury, should be limited (see link below). This study supports that recommendation. According to a recent study from the National Food Agency, 7 of 10 Swedes eat too little fish.

Italian police: Fake airline pilot rode in cockpit

By Reuters

ROME - A man who posed as an airline pilot and traveled in the cockpit of at least one plane was arrested in the Turin airport using forged identity cards and wearing a pilot's uniform, Italian police said on Saturday.

The 32-year-old, whose real name was not released, allegedly created a fake identity as a Lufthansa pilot named "Andrea Sirlo," complete with a Facebook page that included fake flight attendant friends.

Police said they were alerted several months ago after "Sirlo" introduced himself as a captain to a Civil Aviation lieutenant, who became suspicious because he seemed too young for the job.

The national military police tracked down the suspect from photos on his Facebook profile, in which he is shown posing in uniform and sunglasses in front of airplanes.

He was arrested in the check-in area of Turin Airport on Friday.

Police said "Sirlo" had traveled for free on at least one flight as a "third pilot" sitting in the cockpit. They were investigating whether he had flown as an imposter at other times.

Lufthansa declined to comment on whether one of their flights had been involved and said it was a matter for the police.

At a press conference, police displayed a white shirt with epaulettes and a black double-breasted jacket with pilot stripes sewn on the cuffs. They said they also seized fake resumes, airline badges and an airport staff parking permit.

Turin Airport said in a statement it had not issued any permits in the name of the person involved.

A profile on a website where users can track their flights shows "Pilot Andrea Sirlo" flying from Munich Airport to Turin on Oct. 23, 2011.

Munich Airport did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The case recalls the 2002 film "Catch Me If You Can," in which Leonardo DiCaprio played Frank Abagnale, a real-life con man who is said to have flown more than 1,600,000 kilometers (1 million miles) as a fake Pan American pilot in the 1960s.

'Sirlo' is the name of a flight corridor over Turin.?

Workout Finisher: 10-20 bodyweight squats - Muscle Works Magazine

I was wondering if other people here use finishers at the end of their workout? I?ve been doing simple experiementing for couple weeks and have really liked them. I mostly do them to better my conditioning and hopefully help me lose some more fat.I also take a minute of rest after every set of finisher.Currently after upper body day I do pushups, usually 10 at a time for total of 30-40 reps. I aim to do a bit more every workout and thus far I have been able to add few reps every workout. At the end of a lower body workout I?ve done bodyweight squats, usually 50 at a time for 150-200 reps. I first tried hindu squats, but they were way too easy and light. Regular bodyweight squats have felt far more challenging and seem to have helped strenghten the bottom position of the squat. Next I?ll propably try lunges, as bodyweight squats are starting to get too easy now.

Effects of omega-3 fatty acid: is consuming fish help protect your heart?

Omega-3 fatty acids belong to the family of polyunsaturated fats. A fatty acid molecule has a methyl group at one end and carboxylic acid at the other. 8 reasons you should give talks | Final Bullet

Talks, events, conferences. We live in a golden era for public speaking. I?m convinced this is a very recent thing. I can remember a time when the only speakers you ever only came across were trying to sell you things. Hitler was a great public speaker.

But now it?s everywhere, preaching as mainstream communication, pitching what-you-reckon a totally normal, yet totally weird thing to do. It never occurred to me to try it until a few years ago when someone trusted me to have a go at their event. I really enjoyed it and have spoken at dozens of events since, including many of my own. I still don?t know why other people do it ? but I?m starting to see why people should do it. I?ve realised the people who need to speak most are the ones who want to least. Here?s why:

  1. It promotes your status. When you go to hear interesting people speak, you are aware that those speakers were ?chosen?. They have an automatic air of authority that all but the absolute worst performance up there can?t completely destroy. A speaker ? any speaker?? is someone to be listened to.
  2. It?s a buzz. It?s a good feeling, telling people something that you believe to be true, sharing an idea; teaching, generally. The persuasion is fun, the drawing strangers into one?s world is fun, the nerves are exciting, the feedback is rewarding.
  3. You?re giving them what they want. It?s a complicit con, and you are pulling it. Fundamentally, the audience is there because they want to feel the primal response that kicks in when someone steps up and takes crowd in hand. You?re up there giving them the rain dance they paid for, and no one will resent you for that.
  4. It?s interesting. It?s a distinct and unusual way of interacting with humans, and it?s an ongoing learning experience. Each room is different; some people will be nodding and smiling (look at those people most), some will have their arms folded and their feet on the chair in front. Crowds as a whole behave interestingly ? you can learn from the way they respond to you, and to each other. Great performers really talk to the audience, poor speakers turn inwards. You can?t replicate that anywhere else.
  5. It?s better than writing. Writing?s great, it means you never have to talk to anyone, look a stranger in the eye, think on the spot, get the wrong word, risk misinterpretation, have to explain yourself in a way you?re not comfortable with, or otherwise deal with anything too unpredictable or human, while you build your beautiful stories or arguments. Writing is power in the digital world. It is self-sufficient and precious. Speaking, on the other hand, is gestural, robust and exposing ? which is why many writers are uncomfortable with it. Written words build scaffolds of arguments and ingenious ideas, but speaking them directly into someone?s face is the best way to fill them out into practical ideas, get the fastest feedback you?ll ever get, and find out how silly you?re being.
  6. It gives you a voice. I?m afraid it?s still true that a woman in a mixed group is often doing well if she manages to finish a sentence without people talking over her, guessing what she?s going to say, or simply not listening. This has been my experience time and time again which is perhaps how I end up doing so much writing. But speaking is better than writing, remember? If you can?t say what you have to say in ?real life?, say it to 400 people. They won?t interrupt you. Most will listen. You will not believe the sense of relief at finally getting your point made.
  7. It helps get your thoughts straight. Perhaps due to the above, you never quite get to finish thinking deeply about something. If you want to understand how you feel about something and be forced to think honestly and rationally about it, write it up in a way that means you can tell it to a crowd of strangers. In my experience, if you believe what you?re saying, the only nerves left are the fun ones.
  8. It?s unapologetic. It?s still a sell. Some will buy, some will disdain. But because of the automatic atmosphere of respect for speakers at events, you will not be expected to apologise or back down. You?ll find out what you believe in and you will find people who?ll stand by you on it. Speaking gives a powerful injection of confidence into your ideas and abilities, and a fearlessness too, because you?ll realise that it simply doesn?t matter if others don?t agree.

What are you waiting for? Get up there.

Nonstick trick in the brain

Coated particles can slip past brain?s barriers

Getting drugs into the brain has proved to be a nanoscale puzzle: Anything bigger than 64 nanometers ? about the size of a small virus ? gets stuck in the space between brain cells once it gets through the blood-brain barrier. Justin Hanes of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and colleagues got around this rule by coating particles destined for brain cells in a dense layer of a polymer called polyethylene glycol. PEG acts like a Teflon coating for the particles, preventing them from sticking to structures within the brain and allowing them to move around more freely. When the researchers injected particles 100 nanometers across coated with either PEG (green) or negatively charged water-hating molecules (red) into the brain of a living mouse, the PEG particles easily penetrated the brain while the negatively charged particles got stuck. Larger nanoparticles would give doctors a more effective way to deliver drugs for brain cancers, strokes and other brain diseases, the team reports in the Aug. 29 Science Translational Medicine.
